Savic Plaza Hamster Cage - Review

This is the standard version of the Savic Plaza cage - the 100cm x 50cm version. There is a new 120cm version which is reviewed separately, called the Savic Plaza 120 hamster cage.

This is a good cage for all species of hamster. It's excellent for Syrian Hamsters, but also for dwarf hamsters, providing some adaptations are made to effectively reduce the height of the cage so they can't fall too far and injure themselves. This means either adding a full level, or placing cardboard or perspex inside the bars to give deep bedding (effectively reducing the height by increasing the bedding depth).

Pros about this cage:

1) It has a nice big front opening door - good for interaction with the hamster as you're coming from the front rather than from above. Easy access to items inside the cage.
2) It's 100cm x 50cm! This meets the recommended size by some welfare charities and this forum.
3) It looks quite smart
4) It's reasonably stable, considering it's a "knockdown" cage, that comes apart, as opposed to having a one piece barred top.
5) The bar spacing is 0.9mm so just under 1cm.
6) Viking laser make perspex panels for this cage - it could even be turned into a tank. There are bedding panels (eg part panels for deep substrate) or full size panels to turn it into a tank. A cheaper option is attaching cardboard inside the bars but this doesn't look as glamorous.

Cons:

No real cons but things to be aware of

1) As there is only the one large front door, it can be tricky to attach things to the rear bars (eg a wheel) - unless you have unusually long arms! The solution to this is do it before the bars are attached to the base - easier then. Otherwise it can take two people.
2) It's quite tall - not massively tall but it's 50cm tall which is quite tall even for a Syrian. Although the internal height is actually about 48cm tall. This could actually be a pro as well as it gives a lot of scope for set up and attaching things to the roof, as there's no door in the roof. But it does mean set up needs to be done carefully to avoid any falls from a height onto something hard. Either placing hard items under shelves, or having things attached to the roof to break falls, or having deep bedding (or a bit of all of those).
3) Once put together it's stable but the bar top can feel quite flimsy when removing it - eg the side panels can start slipping out of the corner pieces. This is something you get used to when handling it.
4) Sometimes the cage can arrive with broken plastic side pieces which is annoying, but it can be returned/exchanged.

It's one of the best 100cm hamster cages available in 2022 with bars. However the newer Savic Plaza 120 is not much more expensive and is a much better cage sizewise with a lot of scope for enrichment.
