Raffy (Syrian Hamster)

Well he didn't come out any earlier after a missed night and kept me up again lol. I think if he missed two nights he would be in a huff and not come out at all. He did that a bit last night. It was like - yes I do want to see you and come out and play but if you ignore me, I will ignore you too!

He comes out earlier for food but goes back to bed. I think the lighter nights will help possibly - as it gets a bit lighter.

I think it depends on the hamster :-). When I had two Syrians, neither wanted to come out this often.

It sounds liek there’s a bit of a battle of wills going on! Hopefully the lighter evenings will help then.

Raffy came out to fill his pouches late evening, as he does, but then goes back to bed and only wants to come out of the cage later. I see he has left a nice pile of poops for me on top of his house at the right hand side :)

That was very considerate of him to leave his poops in a tidy heap for you to collect.

Raffy is sort of tidy and messy as well. By the way he did eventually stuff his house full of paper! I think he twigged he would get cold if he didn't.

Yes it's more normal Syrian hamster house now :) It took cold weather to stop him being a gypsy!

Raffy has got his home very well organised indeed. Very smart

Thank you Coco. Yes Raffy is as active as ever but I can see him behaving more and more like a more grown up hamster, moving slower sometimes, pouching more, being a bit wiser! Less naive!

That is a good question. Got him in March and I'm not sure how old he was. I decided he must be a baby as he was so tiny and behaved like a baby a bit. But the rescue said he wasn't. I think they thought he was about 3 months old. Which would mean he could be coming up for a year old, which seems about right. I think he is more like a 10 month old but he could be a year old now.

Te, he, cute photo of just his bottom disappearing into his house. Looks like he’s been enjoying his food bowl 😁

Raffy had plenty of sofa time last night while I was trying to get a photo of him :) I took a lot and they were nearly all very blurred lol. He is not the type to sit still for a second. I didn't try that for too long as didn't want to stress him (he sat in a corner and turned his back). So I have a few of his back! Plus it's late at night so slow shutter speeds. Anyway he then had fun exploring the sofa and managed to climb all the way up to the top (like Pickle used to do). He was unsure at the top - rather than run along the back - he was looking over the edge. I told him it was too high - he clearly thought so too as turned round and went down again head first. Which was quite funny - a bit like sledging on his tummy lol.

You would think that would be enough playtime. (I had woken him a bit earlier - before midnight) to try and get a photo of him. But no - just as I was about to go to bed he was pestering to come out and have his playpen time as usual!

Aww sledging on his tummy sounds adorable!

Lol so much for trying to adjust his play time. He has his own ideas.🤣

Oh, the famous Syrian 'kiss my backside' gesture! That brings back memories. Henry used to be good at that.

It wasn't the backside as much as just his entire back facing me. Mind you he had lots of snacks to concentrate on in that corner, having foraged all the treats I left out to tempt him to sit still. He took some waking up - and that was about 11.30pm! He was fast asleep in his cosy nest.

I finally got the living room re-hamsterproofed yesterday. This meant using the playpen to completely block off one corner of the room where there is the odd hole in the skirting board etc. The rest of the room is ok apart from the door to the kitchen .............Which has a gap under it. I stuffed a blanket under that and kept an eye on it! So Raffy had his first free roaming last night :-) He had to wait until I could pick him up easily. He ran all over the place inspecting every bit of the room. I left his wheel and flying saucer and toys where they were - under the coffee table. Interestingly he didn't even attempt to use them. He did climb on the saucer and thought about it but had places to go and things to do.

Anyway he did what Pickle did before - went into the bookcase for a rummage. So here he is - it's just a 5 second clip
