Raffy is our Syrian who arrived on St George's Day this year, at approximately 8 to 12 weeks old apparently (adopted from Happy Hamsters). So I had considered calling him George but he didn't seem like a George - he was absolutely tiny, only weighed 97 grammes and very perky and active. Absolutely adorable. So he was called Raffy, short for Raphael (who was a teenage mutant ninja turtle, and an Angel - both of which suited his personality). Raphael was also an artist but Raffy hasn't shown artistic tendencies (yet).

I absolutely love him. He is quite quirky. He is out every single night, seems very confident (yet at the same time was scared of hands and used to bite at first). He really interacts with you and is so sweet - and also extremely active.

He moved straight into a Savic Plaza cage which he settled into straight away and explored every inch of. Hence him being confident in some ways. However he has always seemed a bit of a gypsy who never really seemed settled. He didn't even have much of a nest in his house at first. He seemed to just be sleeping rough in the house!

He now has a rodipet labyrinth house and is a bit more settled and has a kind of nest - which he has built in the tiniest back compartment of the house! Surprised he even fits in there along with his nest. Unlike other Syrians we've had who choose the larger front compartment for a nest.

Taming was slow and took time and patience (and gloves to avoid being bitten) but I can now pick him up easily and he accepts it without biting - especially on the sofa - although he still doesn't like it.

He had been a child's pet for, presumably, a very short time, before he went to Happy Hamsters. So assume he's had a bad experience with hands or handling in the past.

I thought he was just a very small Syrian but he grew! And is now a healthy 170 grammes and a normal sized looking hamster. I guessed he had probably just been a baby when he arrived but Happy Hamsters thought he wasn't. Anyway he has grown and thrived.

He keeps me on my toes as wants to be out every single night - we've got into a routine. He began escaping the playpen for a while by hurling himself at the sides off the top of a hide. So I removed the hide and added a flying saucer (as well as a wheel). He loves the flying saucer and doesn't try to escape the playpen any more.

He must be about 8 to 9 months old now.

So here he is - the day he arrived

He had the Carolina Storm wheel as a temporary wheel at first until I managed to get another one (which took longer than expected) and he absolutely thundered in it. Although it was a silent wheel it banged against the cage bars, attached like that. He now has a 32cm rodipet wheel - which I forked out for and love - and so does Raffy. I quite missed the noise after the wheel was changed!

He was absolutely wild at first and I thought about calling him - Raffy the destroyer. Because the Plaza cage is quite tall I had carefully attached about 5" of cardboard round the inside bars and had deeper bedding - to reduce the height. Raffy chewed off most of the cardboard in the first few days and there was substrate all over the floor. He also used to leap on top of his flower basket.

He has definitely calmed down a bit but maybe that's the cooler nights. He comes out a bit later now but would happily keep me away all night so he could have out of cage time!

Here he is in the playpen (this was when he was still quite little)

This is his cage set up now (with the labyrinth house and 32cm wheel).

Which then had to be adapted at one end when he couldn't reach the sputnik

He is out now while I am typing this so will have to go and have our time together!

He's gone back to bed because the veg wasn't there. He'll be out again later (even though the veg is now there he will probably sulk a bit first).

Raffy is wheel mad. Most hamsters like their wheels but Raffy will be out on his from the moment he wakes up, regardless of lights, TV and people noises. Hence him being quite confident in that way.

Here he is in his Trixie wheel in the playpen. I don't think he has a favourite wheel any more. It used to be the Trixie wheel (when he had the Carolina storm wheel in the cage which isn't as easy to run on). Then it was his flying saucer (prefers that over the Trixie I think) but mainly his rodipet wheel in his cage. I have seen him sitting swinging in it!

Oh and you have to watch him if you open the cage door as he tries to walk out and still clings onto the door if you try and close it!

What a wonderful transformation. From underweight to healthy. From fearful to confident. You have given him a wonderful home.

Thanks Rainbow. He was always confident from the word go - but slightly quirky and scatty with it. He's grown up a bit now :). It is lovely I can hold him now. He will sometimes sit for a stroke in the crook of your elbow. Picking him up is easier on the sofa when you're on the same level, rather than when he's in the playpen and I reach down - understandable. He literally jumps into a tube when I go to let him out and he goes straight into the tube in the playpen for me to lift him out of the playpen again.

Hello Raffy!
He really has made so much progress and seems very happy.
Love his set up.
I suppose when the clocks go back this weekend he'll be getting up at his usual time again.

I am not sure what he will do. I'm not sure what I will do either lol! I always get confused when the clocks change - I really don't like it! The cooler nights are definitely affecting him. He's been up once but gone back to bed and is usually raring to be out by now. He's taken all the nesting material I left out so clearly cosying up for winter.

That reminds me to buy more loo rolls tomorrow. They go through so much loo roll! Soon as i tear it into strips, wooosh and its gone.

He's out now and in his playpen. A bit late!

He is such a lovely colour. My first ever hamster, Horace was a black eyed cream.

I later (by about 50 years) had a cream banded female hamster, Harvest.

Raffy reminds me of both of them.

Thank you so much Tulsi :-). He is a lovely colour isn't he? He is so perky and full of expression too. I love that he responds when I call him.

So Raffy was no show last night! This is almost a first. Only once before has he done this and even then he came out eventually.
I think it is the cooler evenings - he is sleeping later and when it got to 11pm and no sign of him I called him and he came out of his house. Looking a bit bleary eyed. He'd already been out for his veg earlier and gone back to bed. But clearly not awake enough to want to come out. He did a bit of a kind of "I'm enjoying my cage thank you" type routine for a good 10 minutes while I stood there with cage door open and his tube (he normally jumps into it). He went up into his roof level tube and did a lot of funny little dance movements (like scent marking it) - then came out onto his shelf and did the same again. He scent marks a lot. Then went back through his roof tube and out at the other end. Offered him the tube. He wasn't sure, and then rejected it and went back up to his roof tube and had a really big stretch in there (I am thinking it's warmer in there?). Then went back to bed for a bit. He was out on his wheel about 1am onwards.

I'll see how he is tonight. Clocks change tonight!

He had a night in enjoying his lovely cage.
Had to laugh at his little dance moves but know what you mean from Clive. Disco dancing.

Aww, I can picture him with his eyes half closed and his little face peeping and saying 'What's all the noise about?'

Raffy is such a handsome hamster. So lovely he has gained weight since being with you and calmed down whilst gaining confidence. (Raffy the destroyer, that made me chuckle). His cage layout is fabulous, lucky boy. Heres hoping the clock change doesn’t make too much difference to theirs and our routines.

Thank you Zara

Raffy is definitely getting up later since it's got cooler. And not wanting to come out till much later! Usually just as I'm about to go to bed! So had a few late nights. He comes out mid evening to get his veg and food but then goes back to bed. Last night he grabbed some more nesting material and enjoyed a bit of porridge on a teaspoon. I think they enjoy something slightly warm in cooler weather. I've sent off for some more of Ella's kitchen strawberry baby porridge (mainly because I still feel sick when making normal porridge and the smell of that one doesn't make me feel sick - plus the hamsters love it!).

I moved our heated clothes dryer between the cages last night as well - it gives off a very low heat. That seemed to really perk him up - something new next to his cage, and he came out and inspected what was going on.

I have a night video below taken about a month ago (only just got round to uploading it). Where he is meerkatting and swinging on his wheel! There was a better/funnier one but I can't find it! He loves swinging on that wheel - stops for a wash and still swings. It's the first night of his new roof run set up and the slight change of ramp on the left. Which is why he is sniffing everything and checking it out. I was worried the ramp might be a bit steep but he soon showed the solution to that and just nonchalantly bypassed it and hopped straight onto the shelf! He is using the ramp now though. He stops at the top for a nibble of a hanging chew stick before going through the roof run.

Raffy was so busy! It looked like he looked at the roof and thought about trying to open it.

So Raffy is a bit perkier now there's a bit more heating on. And out and about briefly at feeding time. But still doesn't want to come out of the cage till late at night! So he's having to miss the odd night now as I do need some sleep sometimes!

He is still a bit of a gypsy. He has taken all the nesting material I put out every day or so but haven't had chance to see what he's done with it because he doesn't seem to quite get nest building. I've noticed he sits in a corner of the cage at night, in between wheel running, behind the log - under the shelf. Just sits there looking cute and occasionally having a wash. Most of our syrians liked sitting under their shelf.

It must be so much better for you now that you have the camera and can find out what he gets up to. Cute how most of your hamsters like that particular spot :)
