Raffy (Syrian Hamster)

Raffy sounds very smart! I take it he was OK after his slug encounter?

I nearly stepped on a slug when I went downstairs last night and it reminded me of Raffy. It was headed for the living room!

 

[Maz]

Sounds like there is a new superbreed of slug then Ones that head for living rooms. Raffy is fine. I haven’t found any remnants in his cage so hope I haven’t missed something. He is due a bit of a clean out though.

 

[Maz]

Raffy must have enjoyed that taste of freedom as he escaped the living room again last night. I heard this noise. Went to look for Raffy and he was sitting all innocently, nowhere near the door out of the living room. So I sat down again. He must have then nipped out of the door, as the noise was the barrier being pushed forwards - as I could see it was leaning out of place and he'd just walked out. Sure enough he was in the next room, playing hide and seek. But luckily for me, he has always walked into a tube if you put it down!

Sounds like Raffy really enjoys a good game of hide & seek!

Raffy always makes me laugh with his antics He looks so sweet and innocent. It's hard to believe it's the same hamster

He does look sweet and innocent! Clever isn’t it? There is a cheeky side - and of course it’s a game.

 

[Maz]

Raffy had been getting up later and later recently and even didn't seem that interested in coming out one night. But last night he was back to his old self - it's since we started having the heating on more now. He clearly was feeling it was getting a bit cold in the evenings.

So last night he was behaving like a baby hamster again - all perky and zippy! He has always been a bit off with the slightest bit of cool weather.

Lovely to hear Raffy is back to enjoying his free roaming. Has he figured out a way to get up the stairs again?

 

[Maz]

He gave up on those a long time ago - they are well and truly blocked. I have three melamine trays propped up and he can't get up them or past them now I have them on the right step! So he gave up on that. He will occasionally have a go at squeezing behind the file box on the floor that's blocking a gap but rarely - he only does that if he's been feeling ignored and trying to make a statement.

He has however got out of the living room three times by pushing the barrier! I now have a pair of wellington boots behind the barrier so it won't move.

Last night he was quite sweet. He has always liked rummaging around in an alcove behind the tv. There was a cardboard box with a few old childrens toys in there and he liked to climb in that and rummage. Recently it was moved somewhere for various reasons and then got put back again but it's not quite in the same position.

Raffy seemed pleased to see the box back there and I could hear him rummaging - for quite a while. Had a look and realised he couldn't get out again. Well he could but it was clearly a bit too high to jump from for comfort. (About 10" maybe) so he needed a bit of help to get down again - I offered him his tube and he just walked in.

Aww Raffy with his toy box does sound sweet I can just picture it!
Has he been in the coal bucket again?

No that only happened once and he wouldn't normally do that - he was annoyed with me at the time. But just in case I will move it out of the room until it's needed.

Raffy: I've been slug hunting but didn't find any

Raffy has clearly noticed the colder nights - I found this- it’s the top hole of his house with bedding popping out so he has clearly stuffed his house with bedding.

I also spilled hamster food on the floor last night and went to get the dustpan and brush. When I got back, Raffy was hoovering it up for me! Pouched the lot.

They do make very good hoovers!

He’s been busy in his house, looks very cosy.

Aw, what a busy past few days he's had. I can only imagine the look on his face when he was stuck in the box.
