Raffy (Syrian Hamster)

Oh wow, he really does like to free roam! Pity he does not wake up in the day so you could let him while you are up. :)

At the moment he is having to miss a night sometimes as I can't stay up if he wants to come out after midnight - then the following night he is banging at the bars a bit earlier!

Clever he bangs the bars earlier! It is like he knows you are tired so thinks he will allow you to go to bed earlier.

Raffy last night - lol! I fed Pip first. Mainly because Raffy wasn't out. I put both their veg out first, washing my hands in between, then go on to do one or the other them with their hamster mix. Last night I did Pip first. Because Raffy wasn't out. Between the front of Pip's cage and the side of Raffy's cage is the cloth covering of the drying rack. As I turned round after doing Pip's food I saw Raffy at that end of his cage on a shelf looking through the side bars with a look I can only describe as part jealousy, part cross and part something else. It was a very intent look in the direction of Pip's cage (which he can't see because of the cover). Pip wasn't visible but I had been talking to him while putting his food out and asking him if he was coming out. And turned round and saw Raffy. It was like - how dare you? What are you doing? He really looked cross and jealous and peeved! I used the same voice for Pip as for him! Either that or it was the food when he wanted his first! So I had a little chat with him and he had a long piece of leftover spaghetti from our dinner.

I was reading Zara's description of how Hams house was stuffed with paper and nesting material - which is what all our Syrians have done, and wishing my little gypsy boy would build such a huge nest and stuff his house with paper. It would reassure me. I think he burrows down partly under his house but doesn't have a proper nest.

That sounds like the scary part of a film. The person is happily going about then turns round to find they are being watched! Haha, Raffy wants you all to himself it seems.

Maybe not all hamsters like a nest? He could be cosy in his burrow.

He was definitely jealous, haha but how could you feed the small one first.

I wonder what would happen if you made him a nest.

I am not sure. He just never seems really settled anywhere. I still think in his earlier life he probably had daily cage cleans and wasn't able to settle.

Beryl that is a good idea - I could add a lot of nesting material to the empty nesting compartment. I do think he's a digger as well so yes maybe he prefers that.

Raffy had some sofa time the other night and a little stroke and cuddle for a few minutes. He is easy to pick up now. Despite him being highly active, he doesn't try to jump off. But he's thinking about it! He is not quite brave enough to right now. There was a suitable amount of junk all over the sofa for him to enjoy an obstacle course.

I think he was very tempted to jump in the last photo. Lovely to see him out and about.

He was definitely thinking about it but he wasn't quite brave enough. He will move on from that stage! Once they've done it you can't keep them on the sofa ha ha. Newt just used to climb down. Either vertically down the front of the sofa, or down your leg if he could!

Hamsters can be quite reckless. I remember a photo of Newt climbing down the front of the sofa.

They can indeed be reckless and jump from quite high!

Raffy was nearly no show last night. He rarely wants to come out before midnight these days. He comes out for food earlier, but goes back to bed. I have been wanting to get a Christmas photo of him! So when he was out around midnight I put his tube in the cage. Normally he jumps in keenly. Last night it was - well I might but no I'm off. He shunned the tube about 3 times. I waited up a bit longer and was just about to go to bed about 1am when he started banging on the bars! So another late night with Raffy! Luckily I can have a lie in but it would be helpful if he would come out a bit earlier! At the moment I am missing the odd night and then the following night he's keen to come out earlier.

It was like he knew I was going to take a photo! Maybe he saw the camera - maybe he noticed me shifting things off the sofa ..........

I would not be surprised if he knew you were trying to get a photo. My past rabbit always knew and would turn his back when I tried!

Raffy has completely cleaned his plate! He has a large terracotta plate on top of his house and it had started to fill up a lot with his leftovers (usually the round brown things from Harry Hamster that he leaves and a few other bits and pieces). It was getting a bit full to add new food to so I tipped the remnants away and put two new spoonfuls of food out.

Clearly this has bothered him as he has pouched the lot! All gone. Assume he now thinks I'm a food thief. Normally he just picks at it!

They are fussy though and don't want the food that's been on the plate for a day or two.
Maybe he was waiting for you to chuck the old out and top up with fresh.

True but I top it up with fresh every day! And he leaves most of it. But good point.
