? Pouch abscess

Morning all. We were away for the weekend so haven’t laid eyes on Maggie until this morning (she has been fed and watered daily, but not physically seen by friend over the weekend as she’s never out and about before midnight)

Horrified to see her this morning and find she has a big angry lump on her neck. Wondering if this is a pouch abscess or something more sinister.

Waiting on vet calling me back to tell me if they can see her today otherwise will need to wait until tomorrow.

Seems fine in herself. Active, eating, drinking etc but clearly masking pain I think.

Oh poor Miss Maggie. It does look like it might be a pouch abscess. Hope the vet helps sort it out. She'll probably need antibiotics at least.

Thanks all! She was sedated and investigated. Looks like a herniated/prolapsed pouch?! Small perforation here her pouch had come out through.

No idea how or why but it’s been replaced and the hole sewn up with dissolvable stitches. Vet had never seen the like before. She’s had an injection of more antibiotics but no meds sent home with us.

She’s back in her enclosure and seems ok. A little bedraggled looking but hopefully will emerge dry and. Warm tonight after being snuggled up in her nest.

They didn’t say anything about needing to change anything or any after care needed. Should I take her sand out for a day or two until all dried up and healing over or is there no need?

Didn’t manage to get pics at the vet or after but will try tonight.

I would take the sand out yes. Poor little thing. Did they give a pain relief injection as well? If you think she is in pain later, I would ask them for some pain meds. I've heard of impacted cheek pouches, but not prolapsed ones. Hope it's fixed now.

I’ve taken her sand out for now. All looks a bit strange In the tank at the moment.

How long would you think until I can put it back in?

No pain relief that I can see on my invoice but it wasn’t a detailed report. Sedation, stitches and antibiotic injection. She seemed fine in herself though- just still a little sleepy and a bit damp (from saline I presume)

Maybe 5 to 7 days - if they’ve had an op they usually need about that length of time for the wound to dry up/start healing well.

I feel so guilty! Really glad they squeezed us in and that my manager and co-work are so good and made it possible for me to be in and out all afternoon.

I was worried she might not come home again today.

Really hope she’s ok in there and that that’s the end of our medical emergencies. She had a wander about and a pick of food when I put her back in but she was a bit damp when she came home so hoping she’s warm and dried off snuggles up in her bed. I took the opportunity to clean out the wet and more of the wood shavings in case they had something to do with it. So it’s all nice and clean where she’ll be burrowed for now.

Thanks Maz. I’ll leave it out for a week and think I’ll replace for clean new sand when I put it back in. She’ll be raging. Loves herself a good sand bath every night.

It was a strange one because it had prolapsed through a small hole rather than her mouth. From what vet said it was quite unusual. Either way I’m glad she made it through the anaesthesia and hope that she heals quickly and without any further complications.
