Pip has been quite vocal on here already on the Rolling Robos thread :) But just starting a thread for him now. Pip is a Roborovski hamster who was adopted from Happy Hamsters. He was the teeniest tiniest robo I have ever seen! He almost looked like a slug! (Sorry Pip!). He was so tiny and kind of sleek and slim. Not fluffy.

So Pip, Aka Pipkin (usually known as Toodle Pip).

He went into a carefully set up Savic Plaza cage. I was going to put him in the Savic Mickey 2XL (which has narrow bar spacing but isn't as big at 80 x 50cm) as our last robo was in that. But I had always thought our last Robo needed more space, and Happy Hamsters thought the bigger Plaza would be much better for him. I was slightly concerned about the bar spacing, but it's less than 1cm (0.9mm) and they reckoned it would be ok - they knew the hamster and he had not tried to squeeze through bars before - I think he'd been in an Alaska cage before with 1cm bar spacing.

So I carefully attached about 5" cardboard all the way round the inside of the bars (attached with cable ties) giving him 10" of substrate and thus reducing the height of the Plaza cage (the height is an issue for a Robo if not reduced somehow). I was still slightly concerned that, in the unlikely event he might actually get up to the roof and monkey bar, he could still fall on his cork bark which isn't the softest landing. There were no other hazards in the cage. So I decided to attach a very large fleece hammock to the inside of the roof bars right at the top. Thinking - he will never get up there and if he does, the hammock will catch him. It was well over his shelf at one side but a bit of a gap at the other side. So I made an egg box hammock next to it to cover that gap. Also too high for Pip to get into.

Or so I thought! He just hops off a back shelf into the egg box hammock then from there into the fleece hammock and runs around up there in it making a mess and depositing food up there! Then hops off the other side onto his shelf. He doesn't go up there very often and it's all fine - he can't fall from a height and hurt himself.

Luckily he is not a chewer (neither of our robos have been) or I'd have had to take the fleece hammock out!

Pip initially used to run at my hand if I put it in the cage and make me jump/squeal! Lol. He's stopped doing that now we've got to know each other. He still doesn't like a hand in the cage and won't take food from you. At first he would run and hide. Now he sits and watches the hand to see it doesn't come too close. If it does he runs and hides!

I've had him out of the cage a few times and an attempt at a hand taming session once - but must do more often. It would be good to have him hand tamed - but as many of us know, Robos aren't always the easiest to hand tame!

Pip, like most robos, loves his sand bath and sits inside his food bowl. He also loves running up his ramp to his shelf really fast - his ramp is right next to the big front door on the Plaza and initially he'd kind of run at me to see me off then swerve at the last minute and go up the ramp! He doesn't do that any more either. But since he's been having out of cage time he clearly thinks about jumping out! So I have to be careful where he is when I open the door! I have a giant cushion on the floor in front of his cage though. Which is a good job as recently he fell out! Either jumped or fell, I'm not sure - I was putting his bit of cucumber on the right side shelf and didn;'t even see him - I just heard this "flump" noise and out of the corner of my eye could see what looked like a bit of tissue on the cushion. It wasn't, it was Pip's white belly.

He then disappeared under his cage table! I put a tube under there with cucumber in and thankfully he walked into that so got him back quickly.

He now knows though, that if he wants to come out, to go into his plastic pod with a tube on the end (I lift him out in that).

Pip's playpen is currently a giant cardboard box. It's really huge, and ideal for a robo playpen. Trouble is finding somewhere for it to live. I sent for a second Skyline ranchhouse playpen but it needs a lot of work! Quite a lot of splinters and some faults - the tabs don't fit in the holes. I couldn't be bothered to send it back to Germany (if that's even possible) so will have a diy go on it at some point.

Pip is over a year old now and has grown and is fluffy! He looks like a proper little robo now. I'm glad he has filled out a bit as he was SO teeny tiny before.

So here's Pip's cage and a few videos of him at night in his cage when he first arrived, and recently running around in his cardboard box playpen :) . That bit hyacinth hide under his ladder has now been replaced with a similar sized plastic pod with a tube (for getting him out!). He quite likes it too.

It is lovely to hear all about Pip and hear his story. What a gorgeous little boy. He has become so much more confident which is wonderful.

Pip's out! Looking very friendly and chatty (chatty as in silently chatty) - after disappearing for two weeks - because I put the clothes drier between his and Raffy's cages. And it blocked his view a bit. Not sure if he was in a huff or scared by the grey cloth thing he could see. He seemed very pleased to see me and watched as I put food in his bowl, then jumped straight in.

Wonderful! So glad Pip's back. I find that Robos sulk longer than Syrians which is not something i've ever noticed in dwarfs.

I think that Robos are not as food orientated and have huge underground stores so can easily and very comfortably disappear when they are in a strop over something, like a clothes drier.

As mentioned elsewhere, the other night, Pip made me squeal. His cage is in a fairly dim corner of the room. I was putting his food out into his bowl and what I didn't realise was he was actually sitting in the bowl when I went to put the spoonful of food in it - he looked quite camouflaged in the dim light (but then they are camouflaged!). So I went to put the food in the bowl and he leapt up and brushed my hand which made me jump and squeal. I swear he said "boo" at the same time :ROFLMAO:. But I might have imagined that last bit :) . He then sat next to the bowl while I put the food in, which was nice - normally he runs away or goes to sit in his sand bath further away. Clearly the temptation of new food was stronger than the temptation to get away from the hand.

Last night he left me a present in front of the cage door. A teaspoon. At least he didn't bury it at the bottom of the cage this time, but he'd managed to get it from his cork bark in front of the wheel, to the front of the cage - clearly it was in the way.

It is so funny you did not notice him in his bowl. They really are tiny.

I wonder how long it took him to move the teaspoon.

Slight scare yesterday when I realised I had only clipped Pip's cage door closed at one side so there was a very slight gap at the other side. I called him and no Pip. So I left it a bit and he appeared for his blueberry. Whew! I don't think he would try to escape or squeeze through a gap but you never know. It was the end of the door that's behind the blooming clothes dryer. Must watch that - it wasn't easily visible.

Aww, you must have had a scare especially as he did once escape when you opened the door. How cute he actually came for his blueberry. It is lovely he will do that.

That was lucky! It's impossible to predict any hamster's actions but usually they do what we don't expect them to.

That reminds me of when i came home from work one morning to find an upset OH telling me that we've lost dwarf Edwina. He had left her Hamster Heaven wide open all night and couldn't find her anywhere in the house.
First thing i did was to go to her cage and call her. Edwina eventually surfaced and looked at me sleepily.

Poor OH sounded so worried and upset.

Pip is definitely getting more brave about a hand in his cage rather than running away from it. Also perhaps a bit territorial lol! Tonight he kept running up and down his ladder, brushing past my arm, while I was trying to put food in his bowl. He was actually making it really difficult! Plus I had to be careful he didn't jump out again! Maybe time he had some more time in the playpen.

It sounds like Pip would enjoy some time in his playpen. I love how confident he is now.😀

I always think that when Scottie keeps running up and down his front ramp but when i offer his mug he runs away...to come running back once i've removed the mug.

It's so difficult to figure out Robos. Syrians are so easy to understand. They either climb out of their cage or they don't. No fluffing around to keep their humans guessing.

Well after no show for about 3 weeks, Pip was back with a vengeance this morning! We had a particularly early morning, and on early mornings, Raffy is still up and about and champing at the bit to come out, so let him out in the playpen as usual. Pip has been no show morning and night for about 3 weeks.

This morning, as I put Raffy back, I saw Pip was out - I couldn't help but see - he was tummy flat up against the bars above his shelf climbing them. I said hello and chatted to him and he got down and started sticking his nose through the bars. So I went to get him a cereal flake for breakfast to see if he'd like it. He was still there when I came back but had run up onto his top hammock and sticking his nose through the top and side bars. He looked like he was trying to get out! I put the cereal flake through the bars and he grabbed it hard! He seemed very confident. I thought - he wants to come out. Maybe he has just heard Raffy being out. So I went off to get the giant cardboard box and put a few things in it.

Came back and he was still out and trying to climb his clear tube/pod and up against it. I thought - I'm sure he's telling me he wants to come out - that's his transporter. He didn't even back away when I put my hand in the cage but kept looking at me as if I'd done something wrong - like - why have you ignored me three weeks. I didn't Pip - you just went awol. I tapped the tube and he walked into it, so put my hand over the end and carried the transporter pod and tube to the playpen.

Where he had a bit of a run around and a nibble of some food. After a few minutes I thought I'd put the transporter pod in the box as well in case he wanted to go back. He went in and out of it a couple of times, ran around a bit more, snacked a bit more then went in it again and stayed in it, digging himself under the substrate. So I guessed that meant he wanted to go back to his cage. I may have guessed wrong - it was maybe just that it smelled of his cage and was familiar (as it lives in there). Anyway while I was carrying it back he came out of the pod and into the tube and sniffed my hand and didn't look scared at all - more curious. But once it was back in the cage he went straight into his house - so I think he did want to go back.

He wasn't out very long - maybe 5 to 10 minutes. I did do a little video but haven't had chance to look at it yet/upload it. Not much chance of a photo as he was moving too fast!

Oh wow, Pip really has grown in confidence! He is so clever to have tried to let you know he wanted to come out. How cute he grabbed the cereal like that. I bet you are so happy he came out and went into the play pen. I cannot wait to see the video when you have time. :)

Oh that’s lovely that he came out for a little adventure after all that time in hiding! He does sound as though he can be very confident when he’s in the mood & pretty good at letting you know what he wants bless him 😍

Here are a few pics of him before I get the video sorted :) The ones in the cage are a bit blurred and he blends in a bit but you can just about see him - he had gone up to the top hammock.

Looking for a way out

Sticking his nose through the bars. At one point his nose was so far through it looked like half his face was through!

Sniffing his transporter - he tried climbing it a couple of times but kept slithering down the sides.

He’s quite in intrepid isn’t he! That little face peering out of his coconut 😍
