Piggies

If Basil and Cyril's bond didn't work out, plan B was to neuter them and have them paired with sows.

Basil seemed a good fit for Eileithyia-Eris and Dysnomia. I had him neutered,

and after a 6 week wait, he got to meet his ladies.IMG_20211201_173726411.jpgIMG_20211201_175915101.jpgIMG_20211221_190145785.jpgIMG_20220111_203603408.jpg

During this time, Eileithyia-Eris and Jupiter both celebrated their first gotcha day and birthday. Apollo and Dysnomia also celebrated their first birthday too.

So glad Basil got some nice company :)

Over Christmas and New year 2022, I tried my hand at making fleece tunnel and beds. I think they liked them.

Basil and Cyril are gorgeous too, great colouring. They remind me of a friends Guinea Pigs, so adorable. Great fleece beds too, what a fab idea, they look super cosy.

Autumn and Blossom
I never intended to keep Cyril single forever. Even if he did have Jupiter and Apollo as neighbours, direct contact is always better.

I found Autumn and Blossom after they'd been given up. They were lockdown pets and only 6 months old.

They weren't in the best of condition when they came. Had some fungal issues but after a few months it had completely cleared up. They were quite under weight but that soon changed with good diet and plenty of space.

During this time I also had Cyril neutered. Here he is post op, enjoying his recovery feed.

After his 6 week post op wait, he was in with his ladies (you need to leave it this long before introducing freshly neutered males to females as they can still produce babies).

The girls continued to pack on the weight and are now my heaviest pigs, both weighing in over 1300g.

I've never seen a pig get so round!

They were both also pregnant when they came, but lost the pups. They've really settled in now and love their hus-boar, Cyril.

In June, Basil and Cyril celebrated their 1st birthday, and in August they celebrated their 1st gotcha day and Eris and Jupi had their 2nd birthday in August and 2nd gotcha day in November. In December, Mia and Po celebrated their 2nd birthday.

2023

We've started of the year with a bang.

Mia has suffered with interstitial cystitis (sterile cystitis. Stress and certain foods can cause flare ups) for the past 18 months. She's had rounds of antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, urine tests, scans and x-rays before coming to this diagnosis. She's been on glucosamine for almost a year now (I think) which helps with the lining of the bladder so it's not so painful. We were doing well...then came the fireworks over bonfire night and Diwali. Just as it starts to settle down again, new years arrives and there's more. We've been back to square one but I think it's starting to settle again now.

Last week Blossom had a nasty seizure of unknown causes. She's been to the vets and on exam they can't find anything wrong. Obviously if it happens again (which I hope it doesn't) I'm to take her back. She seems ok now, and I haven't witnessed anymore so hopefully it was just a one off.

The problem with guinea pigs is that they know it. They use it to get what they want. They soon have their paws around your little finger 😄

You have such beautiful piggies. It is lovely to see them and hear their story. You coped really well with the pregnancy. I would have been in bits!
I honestly sound like I coped better than I did. It's a good job you weren't on the guinea pig forum. Panic is an understatement. They're a good bunch of people over there though. Really helped in everyway and very supportive. I don't think I would have coped without all their help.

What an amazing guinea pig family you have! It must keep you very busy.

I was so engrossed in the story and photos that i forgot to press all the like and hearts buttons. The piggies are absolutely beautiful and look so happy. Imagine taking in a pair and ending up with a whole family.

Are you planning on getting the males neutered so the family can live together or does it not work that way?
Taking one or two and ending up with a family is sadly very common.

Unfortunately you can have 1 boy to any number of girls but you can't have a girl to any number of boys. Neutering in Guinea pigs doesn't stop anything behavioural. They'll still rumble strut (walk slowly while wiggling their bums and making a helicopter sound), hump and fight even with their plums removed. It just stops their ability to procreate.

If Eris had 2 girls then I would have neutered Jupiter and then reintroduced him after his 6 week wait.

It all sounds quite complicated. I was aware they needed at least one other friend and didn't like to be alone. I am fascinated by their nails on the photos. Being used to little hamster nails!

So many fabulous photos, they are all beautiful and a massive well done with the new babies, it must be a nerve wracking time during birthing and the early stages. You have a wonderful Guinea Pig family 😀
Thank you. It definitely was. I can't believe people breed them on purpose over and over again. I couldn't cope with an accidental litter. I daren't think how I would have been having multiple on the go all the time.

Well the pigs like them although some don't lay in them as they're meant to...IMG_20210319_232924729.jpg

Your piggies are utterly gorgeous and looking at them makes me miss mine. I had a group of five. 😀

Aw, maybe could adopt a few again when the time is right?

I would love to see pigtures of them though, have you made a thread?

There is a thread on here about one of my piggies.😀 I can no longer have piggies due to allergies. Luckily I have Orko so he makes up for that.😍

It's not too bad if I'm honest. I have a routine with them so I can spread out the 'chores' over the course of the week which makes thinks easier for me. They're also on fleece bedding which I find easier than disposable bedding too, although there is some shavings lining their hay tray where they do most of their mess.

It does become more difficult when you need to syringe feed around the clock though.
