Petal is a little old lady now. She’s my little love. She is 2 years and 5 months old approximately.
She had an eye infection last year and I took her to the vet as it wasn’t the first time. Unfortunately the vet tried to force her swollen eye open and blinded her in the process. It was incredibly traumatic and heartbreaking, I was sure we’d lose her but she recovered, bless her little heart! She now developed cataracts on her other eye and she has little vision but she is an absolute sweetheart, she responds to my voice and she really likes me stroking her little back gently with my finger. I love Petal so much, my daughter (whose hamster she’s supposed to be…) tells her friends ‘my mum is in love with our hamster’
She is a little angel, so sweet, gentle and adorable!
She really loves berries, sunflower seeds and apple pieces.

Such a lovely post about Petal. I was just thinking how lovely her eyes are on the second photo. Did you end up taking her away with you this week then She is a lucky hamster to have so much love and care.

Hi Maz, she did have absolutely beautiful eyes, bless her! I was absolutely heartbroken after what happened at the vet, my poor baby!! I find it impossible to forgive myself for taking her to the vet and causing her to lose one of her eyes. She had such gorgeous eyes!
She is here with us on holiday, and she is doing well! She just had some strawberry and sunflower feeds. She loved it. I took the picture of her eating the strawberry half an hour or so ago, she was really enjoying it, I love how she holds her food so ferociously with her little feet. So-so cute!

Mine have always loved a bit of strawberry Except my first Syrian who would look horrified if I gave him anything as exotic as strawberry or blueberry. He was an apple and banana only hamster

Actually we usually advise avoiding giving much fruit to dwarf hamsters due to the sugars and the predisposition to diabetes. But not all dwarf hamsters will get diabetes and it seems Petal has lived a long life and not acquired it

That’s really good to know, thank you Maz! I give her a bit of fruit 3-4x / week nowadays, is that too much? If so, what’s the recommended frequency and size, just to be sure? Thank you
