I'm well aware that Otto looks a bit like a skinny version of Jack but that was not the reason i got him, not consciously anyway.

For practical reasons, i.e. fading eyesight of a pair of oldies, i had been looking for a cream or white male Syrian hamster, ideally short haired and not a baby or youngster.

This afternoon i sat on the floor while Lilly was out again and browsed through the freeads. Otto's ad caught my eye because he was a hamster in a Hamster Heaven going for free. Hamster Heavens sell for around £25/30 so there's always a risk of a hamster falling into unscrupulous hands and possibly ending up as snake food.

Someone was trying to rehome him on behalf of a friend who didn't have the time to give him the care and love he deserved. The family was genuine and really wanted a good home for him.

Otto lived in a Hamster Heaven without a wheel but had a big blue hamster ball. He had toys but they were either dangerous or too small. He had Carefresh bedding but was fed on nuggets. They tried and cared but didn't know about hamsters.

His original name sounded similar to Otto so i called him after one of my late uncles.

Otto is around a year old and tame. He's currently exploring the hall playground.

Welcome to your forever home beautiful Otto. I am so happy for you Beryl.

Ooh Beryl - he's a lovely Syrian and has landed on all four paws with a home with you :-)

I did think he looked a bit like Jack. I'm sure his own personality will soon shine through :) Great that you have another hamster heaven that came with him too.

I'll donate the HH to a rescue when someone needs it because i don't need it. The Alaska is more suitable for a big wheel.
Otto weighs 158g which isn't too bad but he'll gain some weight i hope.
He's racing around on the floor and really enjoying the freeroaming.
Clive was just pouching to go into his house but then he saw or heard Otto and wanted out again.

Aw that's nice Clive wanted to be out again :-) Sounds like he likes a bit of competition! 158g is ok and average but I bet Otto does put some weight in and flourish with you :-)

I may have to adjust his set up yet but i'll wait and see what he does, likes, wants etc

It looks fantastic. He will love it! And look at that little face looking out of the door! He looks happy to me :)

Hello Otto, what a handsome boy!
So glad you got him Beryl, he is reminiscent of Jack but as Maz said I’m sure his personality will soon be shining through.
He looks so at home already & must be so happy with his new home.
Glad to hear he perked Clive up a bit too.

I'm having trouble with Otto's Silent Runner which seems to work itself loose even when tightened. I had this issue before which resolved itself after a few days of tightening it every second day or so.
It's attached to the vertical bars not the horizontal ones which may have something to do with it.
I've now placed a bolt underneath it to help keep it in place.
I have the stand and other wheels if there's a problem with the wheel which worked fine for Jack but was attached to the horizontal bars. See how it goes.

Aw, lovely to see him feeling comfortable enough to eat when you are around.

Aw he likes porridge! Yes it’s probably the vertical bars.

I'm still having problems with Otto's Silent Runner working itself loose. I took it out and put it on the stand for now. I thought it's the vertical bars but can't be because Lilly's and Eddie's Silent Runners are attached to vertical bars.
There is a way of fixing this by using a different bolt my OH just told me and i have heard of this before.
Otto likes that wheel. He's too long for the 10in wheel and the Trixie i'd need to attach to the top to give it some stability.
