I was thinking of covering some parts of Albert's cage roof but wasn't sure if it was a good idea. Could you please post some photos of what your cage roofs look like?
I cover about a third of mine roughly, with a Russian he might chew what’s on top so you could use the boredom breaker mats like Beryl said or the cardboard, I’ve got some old fleece hammocks on mine but I wouldn’t use that with anything but Chinese.

Otto got his bus shelter and tried it out.
I can easily slot the front panel back in should he decide to nest in it.

Another thing that didn't do much for him was the carrot house at the front that acted as a platform to come out of the cage. He never went in it even though i had cut the entrance bigger.
I exchanged the carrot house for a flat top clay tunnel and he immediately walked through it.
The carrot house is now in the playbin.

All this running around is thirsty work.

He has such a sweet face and looks so cosy in his hideout :-) He looks pretty active too - nipping off after a drink.

Re things on top of the cage. I've sometimes used hemp mat. Just because I had some. If a hamster is slightly nervous about space from above or has just arrived. I tend to only do it temporarily as they adjust quite quickly and it can make it so dark in the cage you can't see anything properly!

Yes, maybe a whole top cover would make it too dark because i have mats on the back and window side as well.

He's like Clive used to be with picking up so need to put him on my lap first to get a proper hold of him and pick him up from there.

Otto up for a quick lunchtime pouch. I can hear him snacking in his nest now.

He is starting to feel better in my hand when i pick him up. Not so lightweight and bony, more like a proper hamster.

Look at his full cheek pouch! I love the way he is closing his eyes in sheer bliss.

That’s good that he seems to be filling out a bit now, just needed some TLC.

Yes, Otto is settling in well and enjoying his food, home and freeroam time. He's a lovely hamster and seems to be happy here.
