Well I just had a look and Pip isn't out :) But then he was out this morning. So is Finlay out as well?

Orko is such a lovely looking hamster - and he is quite measured and slow moving in a way for a robo (although I know he can go fast as well!). He seems to have a nice gentle personality that way and doesn't seem nervy at all.

Orko will only eat his seed mix if it is put on his cork logs or tree hide now. I am not sure why. I have to scatter them there or he will ignore them.

I think Orko may have seen his reflection. Here is a clip of him.

I don't think they are bothered by their reflection. I'll put a mirror on the floor tonight to find out.

Looks like he might have spotted himself there! I’ve found some react & some don’t when they see a reflection or even a video of themselves, can’t always read their little minds.

I thought so too. I would love to read his mind. :)

That is a really interesting video and quirky seeing two Orko's lol! I was fascinated seeing everything he did twice, in mirror image 😁 . Maybe he did see his reflection - but he also looks like he's doing what most hamsters do in their cage at night, which is see if they can get out! I think they have this inbuilt wiring to escape and go roaming at night. I've often seen syrians on the nightcam spending a chunk of the night looking for a way out or sitting next to the bars looking out. But most of the night they are foraging, on their wheel or having a nap.

It was interesting to monitor over a few nights as there was a distinct pattern and timing to the different activities (with two different hamsters - although they may have been in sync with each other!). It's not scientific though as hamsters vary in personality and Raffy is one who would happily be out all night but doesn't seem to do any foraging. He has a little corner he sits in.

It was funny seeing two Orko's. I notice hamsters do look for ways to escape. How cute Raffy has a corner he likes to sit in. :)

Well it's cute but he does seem a bit of a nomad - ignores hides and doesn't do much else apart from run in his wheel, sit in that corner or try to get out of the cage!

I ordered a smaller cage for Orko to use when I need to take him out or if he should ever need a hospital cage. It arrived today and there was no padding so the corner has cracked and broken off. The company are going to refund me. I will fix it with duck tape. It should be fine just to use now and then. Silly not to wrap it up and just put it in a box!

I'd send it back and get a replacement if you like the cage. Cracks and tape isn't advisable and not worth the risk.

Is this unsafe? I thought it would be okay as it is just the top.

Orko cage.webp

Ah right. I thought the whole corner had broken off. It's on the outside which should be ok.
Is that the lid or a clear base?
If you have the broken off piece you should be able to glue it back on.

It is a lid. It is called Ferplast Duna Multi. I thought as it was just the corner of the lid it could be taped up and sanded. Would that be safe? If not I will get rid of it.

That is so annoying. I ordered something similar once and it came with a crack across the top. I had to just use it anyway as it was needed as a hospital cage next day and no time to return it. But the crack was not dangerous or cracked right through.

If they are willing to exchange it and you don't need it urgently, that might be better. Just in case the edge has a gap when the lid is on the base - plus it's annoying! Where did you order it from?

It looks like the inside broken bit might just have the odd sharp edge - you could sand it and glue it, but why should you?!

I am sorry that happened to you too. I ordered it from First Vet. I only ordered it yesterday and it arrived today. It was also £50 which is much cheaper then anywhere else I have seen it. I was going to see how it is after applying tape. I cannot see any way Orko could escape from it but it it does not look safe then I will buy it from another place.

They just put the cage in the box with no packaging at all.

I know they sell them here, but the price isn't much different and I think postage is extra. It's gone up like everything - it used to be £39 to £45.

Thank you. Yes, I saw that and the postage is almost £7!
