Hamster Heaven without external tubes and shelves set up 20220421_132910.webpfor a Roborovski hamster.

Set up for a very reclusive dwarf hybrid who needed a lot of overhead cover.20200929_145935-1.webp

Hamster Heaven set up for an elderly Syrian hamster who loves to climb but can be wobbly on a bad day.
He still has shelves, a ramp and a tube run but everyhing is at a low height. He finds the rat sputnik easier to access without the top half.20221016_141613.webp

What fabulously enriching setups! Soooo much for the hamsters to explore and have fun with 😍

I can see a hamster in there! Eddie's back - great example of a dorsal stripe!

I love the Hamster Heaven/Mickey for a dwarf hamster. I know some don't consider it suitable nowadays but it's possible to get a lot of enrichment into it, as these photos show.

It's partly why we go with 80 x 50 as the minimum size still. With a recommended of 100 x 50 or larger for all species. But I also think 80 x 50 is fine for most dwarf hamsters (not all maybe). Beryl shows what you can do with an 80 x 50 cage for a dwarf hamster.

Happy Hamsters rescue have minimum requirements of 80 x 50 for a dwarf and a 100 x 50 for a Syrian, which I think is about right. Some will argue a dwarf needs the same space as a Syrian. But practically you can fit a lot more dwarf items in an 80 x 50 than you can Syrian items. 80 x 50 is not that bad for some syrians either but most will need more than a Hamster Heaven. The Alaska gets it about right with the extra height for a Syrian.

I think where many people go wrong with the Hamster Heaven is that they use it the way it comes.
With the two plastic shelves, tubes and penthouse left in place, it's not exactly enriching.
I think it can work with one shelf left in because it leaves enough room for a better wheel and some enrichment.

It's understandable though - people think they are buying a cage with everything needed. And then find they need to not use part of the contents and buy a load more stuff. It's why I wish there was a cage available with good basics. At least the HH has one half decent shelf (although I hated the hump on the shelf!) I guess people always need to buy some extras in the way of toys and enrichment though.

Yes, I completely get annoyed with the hump on the pink shelf! What’s that about??? Although we‘d read up on hamster care, I’ll openly admit that we had not researched enough on cages. We went for the HH as it was the largest one in our pet store and looked fun when in fact the tubes and penthouse just caused problems for us being first time owners. If it wasn’t for finding the forum and seeing the photos of other members enclosures, Hams HH would not look like it does today. I really do appreciate the hamster community on here and all the information sharing, your all fab!

Someone told me the hump is meant to be like natural terrain. Well all it did was make wee run down the shelf! Chalrie used to literally aquaplane down it in his potty!

Oh Maz, poor Charlie and his potty 🫣

Must admit, Hams slipped straight off the back when we first got him. it was one of the reasons I immediately looked for other shelf’s and bridges to position around it.

I am sure Coco will remember issues with that shelf too - and the little yellow inset pot! Charlie decided this was a toilet, not a food bowl - as it was in a corner. So he used to pee in the inset yellow pot - and miss a bit - hence wee running down the shelf. He also used to go underneath the shelf and push the pot out of it's hole. Someone suggested - if that's where he wees - put his potty on top of it. Which I did - hence the aquaplaning down the shelf on his potty. He would push the potty aside, wee in the pot, wee would run down the shelf, he'd get in the potty and off he'd go! The yellow pot became quite a game. Eventually I removed it. And eventually removed the shelf and used a flat roof house instead.

Yes, I removed the shelves when the HH was in use and the top tubes. The yellow pot became a favourite treat pot for all my hammies as it was easy to push down in the substrate near to the nest entrance at evening feeding time!
