My dwarf hamster escaped how do I find hammy?

Hamster still has not returned to his cage. I woke up and no hamster. I will wait a few more days. I also bought a no kill mouse trap. I still wounder if my cat ate him. I guess i will never know if my cat ate hammy or not.

I'm sorry to hear that. Try not to think the worst. Had any of the food gone at all? Any of the trail of treats leading up to the cage? Any sign of him being anywhere or any sounds?

Sometimes hamsters just suddenly appear a few days later. It's not nice having the uncertainty I know.

Is there any way he could have got out of your apartment? Any holes in the floor where pipes go down eg?

Trying the humane trap is an option as well. The thing as well is, that if there's a cat around, a hamster will probably stay well hidden.

Cats don't usually eat what they catch unless they have been living partly wild. I think it's more likely your little hamster is hiding and will stay hidden until everyone is asleep. Then hopefully he will come out and get caught in one of the traps. We had another hammy who was recovered using a humane trap do they are well worth setting up 🧀🙏

None of the food was touched in the cage. I do have a front door that has enough space at the bottom for hamster to go under. I will keep waiting for hammy to return. He will come out soon I hope. Maybe the humane mouse trap will catch little hammy. I also have wild mice in my apt, so maybe the no kill trap will catch them as well .My landlord tried to get the maintenance guy to put up sticky traps for the wild mice.. I never let them do that as I read that was Inhumane. I bought no kill traps instead, to catch mice as well.

Was there any food on the floor leading up to the cage? The last time I had one on the loose overnight, he had taken a little bit of the food. I didn't get him until the second night, when he went back to his cage, so I would try the same thing again tonight. You and the cat in the bedroom. Cage on the floor - tempting smelling bit of pizza or whatever inside the cage - a trail of seeds or something leading up to the cage (just for 10" or so, and you could set the humane mouse trap as well - maybe in the kitchen area.

Do you have any sunflower seeds you could leave a trail of? If not maybe a bit of the hamster food. They find the food and follow the trail that leads to the cage. It doesn't have to be a long trail.

It sounds like you don't have any wild mice at the moment or the food would be gone!

i did put a trail of seeds by the cage no food was missing. the peanut butter also has not been touched., which i put in the cage. Well hammy is hiding in a good spot, cause i looked all over and can't be found at the moment. I do have a lot of boxes by my bed. I had to clean out my closets because they are redoing the inside of the closets and I have a ton of boxes all over the place and clothes. I can't wait until they get things done, but I wounder if hammy is in a box, under the bed, or in the pile of my clothes, which is hard to tell. But also he could of escaped under the door. I will wait and see. I have a gut feeling he is hiding somewhere.

Where should I place the no kill mouse traps, I order 2 traps,. Should I get more no kill traps, or is 2 enough? I will place one trap in the kitchen, but in my bedroom, should I put the trap under my bed, or along the walls, or near the boxes?

My non kill traps are coming tomorrow from Amazon. I will place by the walls. i am using peanut butter and Tomorrow I am going to buy some cheese , so I will use that as well.

Have you tried putting flour around on floor. You would see paw prints if he walked over it. I wouldn't give up , some can be gone for days , weeks , months , and still come back. I hope he turns up soon. Xx

The humane traps tend to be good. I would suggest using some thing very ‘treat’ orientated, that you wouldn’t normally feed much of, but that is guaranteed to tempt a hamster. I wouldn’t recommend giving it to hamsters normally, but a little bit of peanut butter has a strong smell. Unsalted variety would be better, but if not a small bit of normal stuff shouldn’t do any harm. It would be better than cheese - cats go for cheese! Don’t worry about the cat eating hamster food. It won’t do him any harm. I’d be surprised if he wanted it though…….. my cat would give me ‘the look’ if I suggested he eat it!

Good luck. Keeping my fingers crossed 🤗

e back. I hope he turns up soon. Xx
I have peanut butter, so I will use that instead of cheese, since you say the cat likes it. hammy still has not returned to his cage. but I guess it could take awhile for him to show up. I hope the no kill traps work. My order from Amazon for the traps is coming today. I still have the cage on the floor with the door open. Thanks for the good luck wishes. I am going to need it and so will hammy.

I do not have any flour but I can buy some. I will get the no kill traps today from Amazon. I wounder if my hamster is behind the stove. I hear weird noises behind it but the stove is heavy and I can't move it, to see if hammy is behind it. If he is behind the stove I will wait for him to come out. I am not sure hammy is behind the stove, or not, could of been a weird noise and nothing more, hard to tell.

He will only come out after dark. So all lights off tonight :-)

Aha! Ok you could put the cage on the floor in the kitchen area. And a few seeds in front of the stove leading to the cage. But he will only come out after dark and when everything is quiet. So it's going to be another night of you and the cat shut in the bedroom :-)

You could also put one of the humane traps in the kitchen near the stove and one in the living area.

It's still fine to use cheese because you would only put it out just before midnight ish - ie just before you and the cut shut yourselves in the bedroom! I would try both. And still make sure there's an easy ramp into the cage. He will probably be attracted by water in it.

You could also put a small saucer of water down near the stove tonight. If you have a bit of flour on the floor near the stove and the saucer down and he comes out for a drink - then you should see footprints in the flour (maybe) even if he doesn't go into the cage or the humane trap.
