This afternoon I am on my hands and knees checking very inch of the living room to make sure it’s hamster safe I have bought spiral cords for the television cable but they are far up and not in his reach. Nevertheless it can’t harm. I will also mop the floor so he doesn’t collect any dust on his investigation.

People bunny proof their houses with similar cord protectors, armoured against rabbits 
You certainly don't want Nibbles chomping cords, the plastic on them is very soft and easy to bite through. Human electricians do so sometimes

when he free roams I watch him with eagle eyes

They do seem to home back to it 
What I do when I start them free roaming, after they've been used to a playpen, is put the playpen items on the floor where the playpen used to be. Then even if free roaming all over, they come and home back to the playpen items - so I can always get them back.

he loves free roaming but has never been in the front room yet. But he’s not at all stressed, he’s been cleaning and foraging. He just hasn’t checked the opening
