Mr Nibbles Diary

If that was a pet store, I'm sure that would be illegal. That kind of thing does go on but usually under the radar or privately, not via pet stores.
It was at the local pet store, maybe she just wanted me to take him. Which I was intending to do anyway. I am not sure about hamsters but they definitely sell white mice as rat food 😡 I think it’s awful

I’m was just looking on Amazon the Bucatstate 120 cm is on offer. If I put it on the wheels I could put the playpen in front of it, leave the door open and with a small ladder he could climb back in himself. If I transferred the bedding and set it up identically it should be okay? I would of course close the doors in the morning once he climbed back. He would not be able to escape anywhere else than the playpen/cage.

Would you have any floorspace left to walk in? :-) I would still never leave them unattended overnight if they can leave the cage. Hamsters are amazing escape artists. Tino escaped a bucket trap!

Yes I would have enough room. If he did escape the kitchen is safe, so that wouldn’t be too much of an issue. You can’t imagine the fuss he kicks when I try to get him out before I go to bed 😳

Plenty of room, of course the desk would have to go in storage
Behind the door is the front room which is smaller than the kitchen, also hamster proof.

I know what you mean, as our living room is hamsterproofed and when Tino was on the loose for two nights, I wasn't too worried because of that. However, it's not really safe to have a hamster on the loose as they can get into scrapes, or be accidentally trodden on or something fall on them. Or they could chew through electrical wires. They need to remain in the enclosure overnight, unless you're awake and with them.

Btw he’s not interested in free roaming in the kitchen anymore, he just wants the playpen and his wheel. You can buy that wherl
On TEMU in 26 cm.
The Bucastrate cage 100 cm is also on TEMU for 200,- euros instead of 199,- euros!! I couldn’t believe it

Yes I wouldn’t let him free roaming overnight, and I tested last night what he does when left in the playpen (it was gone 2 pm) he just was in the wheel, eating or sleeping on the hemp mat. But when I wanted to put him back! He was wide awake and kicking a tantrum!

The shop could sell the unwanted animals to a snake keeper without asking questions 🙁 The rodent mills want to unload the next young stock and know who buys snake food 🙁

The chewing is a worry. Any wiring, furniture, fittings might get chewed 🙁

I measured everything, the 120 cm is too big, but the 100 cm is quite a bit bigger than my actual cage…. I have ordered it on TEMU and got the wheels (22,- euros) for free! TEMU is very good if anything is not okay, you can send it back without any problem. My actual cage had a few issues but they would not accept a return without me having to pay the transfer. If anyone is looking for a Bucatstate I will post it when it arrives under cages ect.

There would be no wiring’s he could chew only my chairs and table 🙄 but they would not harm Nibbles…. I have ordered the Bucatstate 100 cm plus wheels. I think it will be possible to put the playpen directly in front so he could climb back on his own. I would test that on a weekend.
Until then I will either have to leave him in his cage or argue with him at 11.00 pm 😅

I am a bit worried about the height of the bridge / staircase in case he falls onto the floor 🙁
With the actual setup i would not do it, but the new cage will be placed on the floor. I ladder would not be high and I would put shavings underneath… I will try and do an example foto (only without the cage)

I would ask my friend to build a ladder with sidings, like a tunnel. Or maybe use a tunnel if I could find a good one. The panel in the playpen would be swapped for a lower one. I have got 6 more in different heights

The cage would be right next to the playpen…. I will see, only a few thoughts. My friend (a carpenter) said if that doesn’t work he will build a playpen around the cage, I could leave the door open with a ladder/ tube and there would be no danger at all. He would build the pen out of wood

I do see the idea, but it's still recommended to have a hamster in a securely closed enclosure overnight. I would worry about them having that kind of free access overnight if I wasn't there to keep an eye on things. On the other hand if the enclosure was inside a secure playpen, then maybe but a playpen can still be scaled somehow. As I say, Tino managed to escape a bucket ............. Also if they do get on the loose, they can keep hiding and it's a worry if it goes on for days and you don't know where they are. One owner eventually found her hamster trapped behind a piece of furniture, where the hamster had died trying to get out again.

It might be better just to put up with the tantrums. It does pluck at your heart strings, but he has a nice safe cage and a wonderful wheel and lots of tunneling material. It won't harm him to go back inside when you are off to bed. Tough love 🥰

He might enjoy the bigger cage, it is larger. And easier for me to clean. I do hope he will eventually get used to going back on my terms 😅
