Mr Nibbles Diary

They are also quite clever at knowing when nuts are a bit off. With us, it's not until you start eating it tastes bad sometimes. My previous hamster Raffy was cracking a monkey nut once and then tossed it away in disgust. Clearly it was going a bit off!
Amazing how far they can toss something isn’t it 😂 also spitting the poop! I was amazed how far he spits it 😂

He sounds a real little character :-) You two are going to have fun. The other thing they can do as time goes on is - communicative looks - and tricking you 😂

They are fascinating to observe :-) Their personalities vary a lot so some may be more cheeky or communicative than others and some may depend on the level of bond. I've had hard stares, (let me out human), black looks (what have you done?! Shock horror), sulks (turning away and presenting the back end), guilt-tripping (sad eyes pleading looks). One of my Syrians kept tricking me into thinking I'd forgotten to put his veg out. I was in a routine, and thought I had put his veg out when I put his food out, but saw him sitting next to his veg plate looking at me, looking at the plate, looking at me - waiting. I thought - oh maybe I forgot to put the veg out (every day seemed the same), so I went and got a bit and put it on the plate. A few minutes later he was doing the same thing again! I just said oh no you're not fooling me this time - I know I put it out!

Sometimes looks and behaviour can be very communicative. Eg indicating there's a problem - water bottle or bowl empty (frantic to get your attention or going over and looking at it and looking back at you - literally pointing at it with their heads). Or wheel jammed - similar. So any frantic behaviour things should be checked out.

It's fasincating how intelligent and communicative they can be :-) Jealousy is another one. I have two Syrians - if I talk to one, the other sits staring at me jealously from the side of the cage. Dislike or particular like of certain humans! One of mine didn't like men.

Looking happy - yes they can look happy. Looking cheeky - twinkle in the eye and head turn. The guilt is the worst one!

I would never have thought such a tiny creature could wrap me round its little paws so much 😂 yes I have noticed the different expressions, right now whilst he sees me interested in my phone, he stop the wheel and stands on his hind legs looking to see what is more important than him!! I was allowed to stroke him tonight, not just a small stoke, I was allowed to stoke his back neck and sides. I was surprised, he doesn’t feel squishy and soft like my old hamster, he’s really hard and full of muscles 😂 I tell you he’s a macho

He seems to like broccoli 🥦, he’s not crazy about it, but he eats it

Fright night:
A few mornings ago I gave my mum a terrible shock 😂
I took my piece of strawberry in my wheel, I like taking special treats in my wheel!
Anyway it went wrong, I squashed the strawberry into pulp, it was very sticky… when mum checked on my house the next morning I heard her gasp and say oh no!
There was red pulp in my wheel and tiny red footprints everywhere, the shavings around the wheel were red too 😂 it looked like fury in the slaughter house! I was tucked away in my bed snoring.
When I heard her checking the wheel I got up for a treat, she was sooo happy to see me 😍
Then she noticed the rest of the strawberry stuck to the wheel and calmed down. I took my monkey nut gave her a sheepish look and went back to bed, what a drama queen! But it was sooooo funny (for me at least)

They do give you scares like that :-) Was the piece of strawberry maybe a bit big? Mine eat it straight away but they'll only eat so much so if he took it to his wheel (favourite place) to eat, he maybe had what he wanted and then started running.
