Lovely, yes the extra space gave him a good run. He's a very sturdy hamsterI will be do tired tomorrowfinally he settled down in his wheel. He kept shaking and biting the door to come out again. I couldn’t believe it! He hated the playpen but loved the kitchen! He had cobwebs on this head
At least I knew there is nowhere he could escape... only a ventilation gap in the board under the oven. I quickly stuffed a cushion in there. I will get some rodent mesh today and cover it with that. and I tied knots in the curtains, but other than that it was 100 percent safe.Lovely, yes the extra space gave him a good run. He enjoyed it so much, when I put him back in his cage in the jar he refused to get out of the jar clinging to it and begging to get out again.
Of course I let him back out it was already pass by bedtime, so I thought who cares.
He climbed all over me and played his favorite game: I tapp on the floor and he comes running to see what I am doing.
He has now realised the door is the way to freedom, before when I got him out with the jar I dont think he realised that.
It was sweet to see him so excited and happy and he loved the cool floor tiles.
I am so glad I took note of Maz warning to always have a cushion under the cage

Maybe that’s why he was acting so strange the last few days. He didn’t want to get put in there. I would rather have him in the playpen as it’s less stressful to supervise.

Ah it sounds to be going brilliantly with you two - he sounds to have quite a bond with you now. And yes it's what they all want - to escape the playpen and free roam! And even when they have that, it only satisfies them for a while and then they're trying to dig a hole in the door to the next room

I have altered the playpen which I will place in the kitchen. Tomorrow the wheel works ll arrive. If I am lucky he might explore the playpen and have a spin on the wheel. If that all bores him, I still have the bedroom and bathroom to explore. Only the frontroom is a no go, as I don’t fancy crawling under the settee only to find him chewing a nice bed in there

You just reminded me what I do to get them back. After they start free roaming, I still put all the playpen items on the floor in the same place, without the playpen itself, so the hamsters tend to home back there at various times once they are used to the playpen wheel and familiar items. Tino in particular would disappear off rummaging for some time and then home back to my feet and the playpen items so he was always easy to get back (it has changed now he is older as he gets tired and nods off somewhere and I can't find him so he is back to the playpen and sofa again).
But with an opening on your playpen, like you have above, you could leave it set up so Nibbles can come and go as he pleases in between free roaming

he was sleeping in his wheel this morning and still in a mood. He looks okay, who knows what annoyed him
