A few hours ago i spotted mold mites in my hamsters cage. Of course, i panicked and put her in a different cage. The bugs were only at the part of the cage where she sleeps and pees. Since her pee corner is under a lot of bedding I dont clean it often as i dont want to destroy her burrows. Should i give her less bedding when i prepare her a fresh cage? Im assuming the bugs are there because of the moisture and i dont want to deal with mites again. But on the other hand i dont want to give her so little bedding… Advice is appreciated

Hi. Sorry to hear that. If the mites were only in the sleeping/peeing area, it would probably have been enough just to remove that particular area of substrate. It seems like they were localised. Anyway if she's been moved for now, and you're re-setting up then it'll be solved. Is it particularly hot where you are? This might just be a one off due to the hot weather at the moment. Many hamsters pee in their bedding and don't get mould or mould mites.

How much bedding did she have before and what type of cage or enclosure is it?

Shes in a Bucatstate 2.0 and the mites were in this little area. The bedding was up to the little cage door so probably about 20 - 25cm. Also yes it is really hot. Thank you for answering so fast. I honestly think i panicked too much since its my first time dealing with mites. Would probably be enough to remove just that part of the bedding but its better to be safe than sorry. I dont want these little guys bothering my daughter.😤IMG_9791.webp

I guess you could keep it at 20cm but then that might not work with the length of platform legs you have :-) I would just put it back as before and keep your fingers crossed :-) Is it possible he took a bit of fresh food or veg down there to create mould and mites? I did find a half eaten blueberry hidden in my robos cage once that had mini maggots crawling out of it and all round that area. Thankfully it was just localised and I only had to remove a bit of bedding.
