About a week ago, I went over to someone's house just to help take apart a bed. We went into the storage room and I saw a hamster cage, literally in the dark in a pile of junk and trash. It was a small 1x1 metal cage. Not to mention it's a smoker house with two dogs who pee and poo in the house and are constantly barking. I said "is your hamster still alive?". Her: Yep!
After I left, I just felt so bad for it and said if you're not gonna take care of it properly, I will take care of it.
I hadn't even seen the hamster, I was expecting the worst! I needed to do an immediate health check for wet tail, discharge, crust around his eyes or nose, activity level to see if he's lethargic from being malnourished or sick... and I didn't even know what species or gender he was is.
I picked him up the very next day and she gave me all the supplies. Luckily he is a resilient little guy, and he was totally healthy although bored and stressed. All he had his entire life (~1yr) was:
- 230 inch sq floor space
- 4 inch deep paper bedding
- Huge bowl of Browns Tropical Carnival
- 1x hide
- 1x 8 inch wheel
- 1x water bottle
I saw him biting the bars twice, it made me so upset and I needed to do something fast. I decided on a bin cage, which I just finished last night! The upgrades:
- 800 sq inch floorspace
- 8 inch deep bedding, layers of paper, aspen and timothy hay.
- 3x hides, one of them being a hay log which he loves
- 1 inch deep sand bath... previous owner bathed him in water
- Sprinkled food for foraging
- Many diy chews
I still need to:
- Attach his 12 inch wheel
- Sprays
- Create a 4 chamber bottomless hide
Turns out, after everything he has been through, he is the friendliest little guy! He comes out when I come home to investigate, and he doesn't mind being handled.
I never thought I would be interested in hamsters but Milo crawled into my heart when I least expected it
