I've been lurking on this forum for a while, on and off, because I joined just as my last hamster died. I finally have another hamster (and some time to read/post here). She's a Syrian called Rosie. She's nearly a year old, is very confident and nosy. If I'm near her cage and talking she expects food to be involved. Some evenings she sits on a high shelf and looks at me and chews some cardboard because she wants me to leave the room and turn the light off so she can run on her wheel (apparently she can't do that when I'm there).

Aw Rosie is beautiful! And I love her name :) I am so sorry to hear about your last hammy. These things are so very hard for us - we just want them to live forever. But I'm also so pleased you have a new hammy to love and care for and she's a lucky girl to have a loving home :)

I have such an image of her sitting chewing cardboard and looking at you  . It sounds like she's a cardboard shredder! Which is quite common with female syrians - it seems to keep them happy. It's good she's happy to be out in the cage while you're there though.

I bet once she's had out of cage time, she will not be wanting you to go away ha ha!

She's pretty! What kind of plant is that? Rosie looks ready to give it a munch

It's a fake plant, no idea what sort of plant it's supposed to be a copy of. She did look like she was going to have a good go at it, but then I distracted her and she forgot about it :)

It's really cute :-) She clearly likes it as she has her paw resting on it :-) Can I ask where you got it from please? I haven't seen one like that before - it's really nice.

Maybe you'd like to start a thread in the diary thread section for Rosie :-) It's the hamster's own thread, where you can post updates and photos as they progress, and share their funny antics. Some of us have a thread like that for our hamsters. It's in this section. You can call it what you want - Rosie's Thread, or just Rosie, or Rosie's explorations or Rosie's Adventures or whatever :-)

It was a present. It came as a set of four, all different, but all small fake plants.

They train us well, don't they?

Rosie has such a pretty face and she’s a lovely colour. Great that she is confident, made me chuckle that if you’re near by she’s mostly expecting food. What’s her favourite nibble?

I'm not sure but I think I've seen them in IKEA also Dunelm not sure how far away your nearest one is though.

I don't know. The only food she's not been taken off me is mealworms, which is odd as the rescue said she liked them.

Aw, they are funny little things. Some love mealworms, others don't. Our first Syrian, Charlie, was incredibly picky and would give black looks and turn his back on you if you offered something he didn't like. He definitely didn't like being offered blueberry or strawberry and looked quite shocked and horrified and turned his nose up at them :)

She's an idiot, like all hamsters really :) I've just discovered this morning that some time last night she put some food on her wheel. She refuses to run on it when I'm in the room (even if I turn the light off) so we'll see what happens to that food tonight.

Here's a photo of her having a wash in her playpen (most of the time she's not still long enough to photograph). Incidentally, that's the Omelet playpen and it's standing up very well to her chewing anywhere there's a hole.

I am still getting back into the swing of reading the forum.

She looks so cute there :-) It's a great playpen isn't it? Intersting to see how it withstands a female syrian 😂 I can imagine food flying everywhere. Some get bothered by it and some don't IME. I had one hamster who would give looks as if I had put the food there ha ha. It makes a mockery of a silent wheel though sometimes!
