IMG_5443.jpegHello members! Meet Fluffy. I got Fluffy from the pet store a few days ago. Fluffy already had no hair on his nose when I got him. Hopefully it grows back in its own time. I am learning about how to care for Fluffy. Can someone tell me what kind of hamster Fluffy is? I googled and I am still confused. Thanks so much, Donna

Hello & welcome to the forum.
Fluffy is gorgeous!
The fur may grow back on his nose, he may have been injured by cage mates in a pet store but now he’s in his own space hopefully it will all heal up & grow back.
He looks like a little Russian hybrid to me.

Welcome to the forum little cutie! Has he been living in a cage with bars in the shop? Glad he's with you now, a nice home.

@Socks Mum Fluffy was in a large fish tank with about 10 other members like him. they were younger adults because the fully grown adult mom was in another tank. It may look like the cage mates attacked him? But now he has his own home, looks like he is more chilled and relaxed now and doesnt look like he is scratching himself.

He is very active at night and sleeps all day. This is a common trait of Russian hybrids. thank you @elusive for the suggestion.

Regards,
Donna

That's good to hear. He sounds very happy to have a safe home of his own now!

Hello and welcome. He has such an adorable look about him and is definitely fluffy :) Russian dwarf hamsters make lovely pets and some can start getting up in the day occasionally or early evening. If he is from a pet store he will almost certainly be a hybrid as virtually all dwarf hamsters are hybrids unless they have a pedigree certificate from an official breeder. So a mix of winter white and Campbell’s dwarf hamsters. He may start looking more like one or the other but will have some features of both. He looks like he has winter white ears to me :-). And colouring as well. There will be other features that maybe look more like Campbell’s features- I can’t really tell from the photo and also he looks quite small still and these may show as he gets bigger.

The main thing to know is they should have a sugar free diet and ideally a dwarf specific diet as they can be genetically prone to diabetes. So a good diet from the start can help prevent any onset. Not all dwarf hamsters will get diabetes but there’s no way of knowing which will and which won’t so the right diet just protects them just in case:)

I think I am in love with him! That face. Poor nose - I’m sure the fur will grow back soon.

His eyes are more Campbell’s I think as they look almond shaped :)

Just coming out at night is normal when your first get them but all my Russian hybrids have been active in the day too once they settled in so I expect you’ll get to see more of him once he settled in & gained more confidence.

I have a Russian Dwarf called Albert. He comes out during the day and night 🐹💕

Don't be surprised if he changes to coming out at any time if he hears you close by and gets a treat when you see him he may decide to put in an appearance

Hi and welcome to the forum, Fluffy looks very cute. Hopefully his fur will return around his nose. Look forward to hearing more about Fluffy and his personality as he settles in 🙂
