This is such good news to hear Lilly is bouncing back well. She's really tucking into that boredom breaker tube. The cage looks great! I can see the wheel only just fits. Fitting wheels and substrate levels can be a pain. I'm curious to know white the light coloured bit is on top of the ladder. What are you thinking of to reduce the climbing height at the front?

I use plastic ladders from recycling cages to give smooth platforms grip and to cover the hooks.

I'm going to attach a strip of plastic at the top of front panel to reduce the climbing height. Run out of acrylic sheets and no time to drive to Ikea in Bristol so bought a large storage box lid at B&Q to cut a strip out.

That's a good idea for closing gaps on ladders :) That's my plan with Pips cage, to have a strip of perspex round the top so he can't reach the roof bars if he did try to climb.

I guess another option might be to raise the substrate level a bit, except in the wheel area, which would lower the height too.

Yes, it's that gap where hooks attach a ramp to a platform i prefer to cover.

I was originally thinking of adding bottom panels to increase substrate depth but decided that the cage is too low for that. Lilly likes shelves with her things on it and i didn't want to compromise on that for the sake of a couple of extra cm of substrate. It will have to be a top panel.

It looks like a great size. Did you notice the extra depth when setting up?

Yes, i kept adding more and more Kaytee. I'm really looking forward to see what Lilly makes of it.

I have now reduced the climbing height with a 2.5in plastic strip attached to the top inside of the front panel.

There's aspen in front of the wheel so i doubt she could reach the bars from there.

But we are talking hamster here and i don't want her to climb there then reach across to climb up beside the wheel, let go, slip down and get stuck between wheel and bars. To prevent this i've attached a small acrylic panel next to the wheel so she can't grip the bars.

Looks good Beryl, is it all ready now?
Yes. I may have to add more substrate or small pieces of cork here and there in case she decides to jump off things but all major fall risks have been addressed.

I'm planning on giving Lilly a little out of cage time in the hall tomorrow morning. Clean blanket, all doors closed and some plastic toys she can't catch herself on but no wheels yet till she's been seen by the vet.
I'll make up a foraging cereal box with paper strips and treats inside. It will be day 9 post op.

The cage is looking good :) I'm sure Lilly will enjoy some out of cage time.

I’m sure Lilly will enjoy having a forage in a nice soft dig box.

Cage looks great Beryl. I'm sure Lilly will enjoy having some free roaming time 💕

Wow, cage looks fantastic, so much floor space, really like the size, Lilly is going to love it. Lovely to see her enjoying her boredom breaker too, looks like she’s on the mend.

I don't know about you people but i find it a real challenge trying to get a set up right. Or maybe i'm just somebody who fluffs around a lot without achieving much.
There were two flaws i identified today.

When i took Lilly out i realized that her underside is quite bald, a combo of hairloss and surgery prep.
The little grass hide she liked is coarse and rough so had to go for now.
Clive had the big version of same hide but i removed his a few days ago due to his deteriorating skin.

Then i realized that she didn't have direct access to her house on the back shelf which would make her more likely to jump off the shelf as a shortcut. So i installed the short bendy bridge (one of the old ones when quality control was still in place) from her old cage. I'm still going to check that bridge in daylight tomorrow.

Of course all this needed a little re-arranging. I also struggle to find this balance of making a cage busy but at the same time leaving enough space to freely move around in it.
