Maybe I worded this wrongly. By Lilly being able to walk out of her cage i meant leaving her cage for freeroaming time which is always supervised by me.
My hamsters live in cages with big front doors so i don't need to reach in to get them out. I open the door and they walk onto the door when they want to come out. From there i pick them up.
Lilly needs to be physically able to walk onto her door and she has short legs so it needs a flat and easily accessible area by her door.

Lilly's ok now with the ledge. It was probably a new and confidence thing.

Oh brilliant! I think you're right. Good that they are cautious at first. If you remember, Raffy was very unsure about his roof tube and a gap between that and the sputnik - he was fine with it after a couple of days and is now very gung ho about it!

It's not a tube, only the hole from the external tube and a matching hole cut in the bin. There are no sharp edges because there's a plastic ring on each side.

She climbs on top of her carrot house which sits on the right back shelf. It's easy enough to get up and down but she needs to climb a little and pull herself up. Coming down she just puts her front paws on the carrot house.
I watched her doing it when trying to escape before i set up the loft so i knew that she could get up there.
I could have cut out a bigger square and installed a ladder but then she would have lost her carrot house. She nests and hoards in the carrot house so it's very important to her and can't be moved or removed.

I love how you've done this. People can be so down on stuff that isn't 'unbroken floor space' but I think as long as they have a decent sized main enclosure (like Lilly does), giving them more space and enrichment like this is fantastic.

I think adding a play bin is fine, as long as the main cage has enough unbroken floor space
. Which Lilly’s does. It’s when people have two attached smaller cages or bins it can affect normal behaviours.Some people might upgrade to a larger cage but it depends on the hamster maybe and Lilly sounds like a very active inquisitive type!
The other issue about two cages attached (if neither are big enough) is the hamster tends to only use one or doesn’t get to move freely around to have normal behaviours. Eg when they put house in one half and wheel and other items in the other half. Lilly has her whole habitat and everything needed in the main cage plus an extra playground to go to if she gets bored
One thing I have day dreamed about with our Robo was having a Ferplast Criceti 100 which has tube attachments - and having a tube from it down to a permanently set up large playpen. I don’t have the space for that right now and the cage would need to be at floor level as robos aren’t good at going uphill in tubes.

Those end caps and plastic rings look identical to the ferplast ones. I guess that makes the HH compatible with Ferplast and Pets At Home tubes and cages!
