This thread is to show options for extra large diy cages. There are a few good cages big enough, as listed on our cages thread, but sometimes people want to go bigger and then it means making a cage. Ikea Hacks can be an easy way.

DIY isn't always cheap. You need to have tools available (or someone with tools who can help) and most diy cages need a lid making out of strips of wood and mesh. However you can get a very large cage for the money.

One of the largest options is

IKEA PAX HAMSTER CAGE HACKS

These are Ikea Pax Wardrobe frames, which basically give you the floor and sides of a large enclosure. You then need to make lids out of wood and mesh. Making the lids is probably the hard part as the rest comes as a flatpack kit.

The largest is 236cm long by 100cm wide by 58cm tall and costs £80 for the frame

The next largest is 201cm long by 100cm wide by 58cm tall and costs £70 for the frame

The next one is 201cm long by 50cm wide by 58cm tall and costs £55 for the frame

An example of an Ikea Pax Hamster cage from Hams and Buns. This one is apparently 236cm x 100cm x 58cm tall.

IKEA PLATSA HAMSTER CAGE HACKS

The Platsa is similar to the Pax - a frame for a wardrobe. Again everything you need will be in the flatpack and minimal tools - but it will need lids making out of wood strips and mesh. These are slightly less tall if you want deep bedding so maybe better suited for dwarf hamsters.

The largest is 180cm long by 80cm deep by 55cm tall and costs £65

The next largest is 180cm long by 60cm deep by 55cm tall and costs £55

The next largest is 120cm long by 60cm deep by 55cm tall and costs £45. Although frankly a 120cm Savic Plaza cage is probably better value and no diy needed or lids making at this size.

IKEA LINMON HAMSTER CAGE HACK

There are various tutorials on youtube for making the Linmon cage, which makes a nice 100cm x 60cm tank style enclosure with a glass front. However, it can end up costing over £100 to make and something like the Savic Plaza 120cm cage is slightly bigger and only costs £114. But if you prefer a tank style then this is a good option.

This is one of the original tutorials and includes measurements and items needed.

IKEA DETOLF HAMSTER CAGE HACK

The Detolf is a well known Ikea hack that is fairly easy as it's just an Ikea glass cabinet tipped on its side, and then needs lids making out of wood and mesh. It used to be a cheap option at £40! Then it went up to £60 and is now £75. With measurements of 163cm long by 38cm wide by 43cm tall it is quite a narrow option with limited height but some people have made raised lids. It's still bigger than most bin cages and offers a lot of scope for deep bedding in part of the enclosure.

OTHER OPTIONS

I'm not aware of anyone having done this but think it could be an option for a large 100cm square cage. Rodipet make a 100cm by 100cm run similar to their LaOla cages. It would need a floor making out of melamine board (possible using Linmon pieces?) and lids making. It costs 99.95 Euros just for the run.

If you know of any more diy hacks please feel free to add them on this thread :)
