I know this might seem a silly question but when you open the bag does the Kaytee bedding just expand everywhere? It says on the packet expands 3x. I need to be able to keep it in bag it comes in due to storage space. I've got this vision my living room is going to become one big hamster bed

It does expand but only if you take it all out. If you take some of the bedding out the rest in the bag stays compressed. Yes, it's compressed and you have to pull it apart and fluff it up with your hands and then you end up with 3 x as much.
I usually keep two 85l bags in my wardrobe (plus aspen, beech chips, cocosoil and a handheld vacuum cleaner where clothes used to be!) because i don't like to run out, lol.
