I'm curious about the color of my hamster.

Hello, I recently brought long-haired Syrian hamster.

He has such a lovely fur color mentioned in the pet shop, however the characteristics commonly discussed in other forums do not match.

First of all, petshop said cannot know its parents gene or morph but they said he is Chocolate Banded Rex.





It has chocolate fur but little bit looks calm and hazy-grey tone also. And has red eyes, which is cannot be in chocolate morph(i read Chocolate morph has only black eyes)

Hello You're right the pet shop won't know his genetics. Even if the pet shop gets their hamsters from a particular breeder, there is no proof of genetics without an ancestry certificate.

I think he is maybe like many hamsters from pet shops, a bit of a mix of all sorts And just as adorable! I had a "Cream" hamster who wasn't really cream at all and not an official cream.

However I've linked an article below that you might find interesting. It's a bit technical in places. But it explains there is a mutation that looks like chocolate but isn't, called ED (Extreme Dilutes) and they can have a red glow to the eyes

But he is not necessarily that either - some black hamsters can be quite brown. He looks rather special.

So yes he is a chocolate colour, he has a band and he has long hair (Rex) but not a pedigree chocolate. I hope that makes sense.

Whatever he is he is a beautiful hamster and I am sure you will have lots of joy togeher!
