Hi all,

My boy, Obie, is now 5 months old. How long should I continue to supplement his Bunny dwarf hamster food with protein for, please?

Currently he has mainly Bunny dwarf hamster mix with a little Science Select hamster pellets and Oxbow hamster & mouse pellets. I supplement with an ear-sized piece of vegetable every other day, and a few dried mealworms or mashed hard-boiled chicken's egg on the days in-between. But as he's growing up, is there a point at which I should stop the mealworms and egg, please?

Also, when will he be fully grown, please?

Thank you 🙂

It's during their first year :-) After that they don't need as much protein and the bunny dream on its own would be fine. Personally I'm not a fan of oxbow pellets - they have too much roughage and aren't really geared towards hamster diets. It would be better just to keep to the science selective and other protein extras.

They're technically fully grown by about 6 months old, but some can keep growing a bit up to about 9 months.

You're welcome :-) How is Obie doing? It would be lovely to see a photo.

Hi Maz,

Thanks for your message. I don't have any new photos of Obie, so I'll have to take some! He is now happy about crawling onto my hand and sitting in my palm, munching on mealworms. Last night I raised my palm about 5" with him sat in it, and he didn't freak out. Need to keep on doing this and to carry on stroking him until he is more accepting of touch.
