Hi everyone,

I recently had to take my hamster on a short car trip, and it made me wonder—what’s the safest way to travel with small pets like hamsters?

I made sure the cage was secure and kept the environment calm, but I’m still not sure if there are better ways to reduce stress during travel. Do you cover the cage, or keep it partially open? And how do you handle longer drives?

Also, I’ve been trying to become more careful while driving overall, especially when transporting pets, since sudden braking or distractions can be risky.

I’d really appreciate any tips or personal experiences you can share about keeping hamsters safe and comfortable during car journeys.

Thanks!

Hello. The safest way is in a pet carrier, wedged so it can't move. A guinea pig carrier is a good size as it can be half full of bedding and nesting material and a small house. It's not really safe to transport them in a cage, because if you had to break hard, the hamster can get thrown across the cage and injured. and things can fall on them or break. A pet carrier is more contained and they're more secure. I either wedge it between the front and back car seats on the floor - or, if I'm the passenger, a keep the pet carrier on my knee and hold onto it.

It's also good to cover it with a blanket or large cushion cover or similar so there is less noise and light. Hamsters often just go to sleep in the pet carrier.

Something like this is good - I've had mine for many years - they're well made. Having said that, I am still cautious, when carrying it, not to just carry it by the handles but to hold it underneath as well. The top is securely fitted, but I wouldn't want to risk the halves coming apart and the hamster tumbling out. Some lesser pet carriers have been known to do that. But I just carry it holding top and bottom. to be on the safe side.
