I had a situation where I needed to fill in some previously chewed area, and searched high and low, but couldn't find any references to wood filler that was safe for hamsters.
So.... I thought, and decided to use a variation of an old woodworker's trick to make my own with hamster safe wood filler. Here's how to do it:
1. Find an acceptable glue (I used Elmer's school glue).
2. Use an acceptable wood and make some cuts to generate some sawdust. This does require you have a saw... manual sawing might take a while, given most manual saws have a narrow blade/kerf.
3. In a disposable container, add glue to some sawdust. You need enough glue for it to be putty-like. In hindsight, I used more than I should have.
4. Mix. Have extra sawdust, in case you added too much glue.
5. Fill the void and give it time to harden.
6. Allow to dry. Once dried, you will likely have a rough finish.
7. Optionally, sand it smooth.
