Higgins says thank you The cake is a similar idea to a carrot cottage - food stuck to cardboard - although this one says cellulose - a bit thicker than cardboard maybe. I think it's coconut on top and carrot round the sides. Similar to the carrot cottage again. No idea what's in the little balls but rosewood treats are usually good and pet-safe I'd never had one before, but others have had them

What was interesting was he just seemed wary of it for a while and only sniffed it. It wasn't till I tried lifting the top off and having it nearer floor level that he actually tried eating it. It made me laugh every time one of the little balls rolled off. He ended up pouching all the balls eventually. They hay inside it was more like grass - it wasn't too bad. Whole thing had been in the freezer obviously.

He had one of the ice cream cone treats last year and managed to get hold of the ball in his mouth and run around with it! So I think now older, that wasn't going to be attempted - he maybe knows his limitations.

He is just as zippy as he ever was

Happy belated birthday Higgins, such a beautiful hammy it was lovely to see him enjoying his cake and he was obviously thrilled with his party Ness

Thank you @Vanessa1 and @Tulsi Yes he's a sweetie. Never been one to sit still but he actually did sit for a 10 second stroke that night, which is unusual, and even seemed to enjoy it.

Higgins is as active as ever. I noticed on the nightcam recently that he seems very keen to come out in the middle of the night these days, and started to wonder if I should upgrade him to a larger cage. But the timing is tricky because he is over 2 years old and it might be a bit much for that kind of change at his age. He always wants to come out again when he goes back

Higgins the night before last - he’s still enjoying the Rosewood “cake” . He had a good nibble of the coconut and then he really enjoyed digging in the hay inside - full of energy and zippy as usual. He had some time on the sofa and climbed into the washing basket - and then couldn’t get out again without some help. He did sit on my arm for a short stroke but no more than about 10 seconds . He must have pouched some of the hay as he ended up with full pouches so I offered him his tube which he rushed into, and took him back to his cage to depouch . Usually once he has depouched again he wants to come out again but I had just put his ice cream cone treat in his cage so I found him sitting in front of that. Offered him the tube again and he gave me this strange look ! Looked at the ice cream cone - looked at the tube , started to walk away from the tube then ran away and shot in his house . No idea what that was about.

Higgins says thank you all He's such a funny darty little thing as well as being sweet. I can't believe he's almost two years and two months old. Hoping he carries on like this for a long time ..........And yes @ilguy I thought you'd appreciate seeing a hamster in a clothes pile . Not that Higgins is actually interested in clothes piles, it's just the washing basket was blocking his route on the sofa!

@breadbunny - Higgins has an interest in anything and will literally eat anything! But generally no, hamsters don't need hay and usually aren't even interested in it IMO. This stuff came in the middle of the round base so with the top off he clearly decided it was interesting to dig in and pouched some by the look of it. It was surprisingly soft stuff more like grass than dry hay.

Also in terms of dig boxes, I think hamsters will dig whatever is in it! It's a bit shallow for a dig box but it kept him happy and busy for a while!

I just love his little face looking up at the start, with bits of hay all over it Unfortunately the pause button on the video seems to cover that bit!
