Thanks Daisy - I wasn't aware of the gaps - it's the same as the old Alaska cage isn't it? It does sound like a 40 gallon breeder tank or 160 litre bin cage would be better and both would be a better size. I can understand the appeal of a cage as there is no lid to make and it comes with a shelf already - less to buy. It's a shame there aren't bigger cages in the US - the Zanzibar is about the biggest.
Yes, it's the same as the Alaska and can have some gaps at the corners.

Barred cages tend to be easier to set up for Chinese hamsters with ledges, hammocks etc, but security is more important so probably a tank or bin cage is better here.

Well it is - if you don’t use the tubes :). What would be easiest for you? Eg is diy difficult to achieve to make a bin cage lid? I think most people would get a tank for a Chinese but the Zanzibar cage would be ok - that depends on your cat really!
Yes, dwarf hamsters can get between the gate and the penthouse as the plastic wall is not welded at the bottom where the metal gate closes against it. The top gate/door may need to be clipped down or wired to close it more securely and avoid gaps as it only has one clasp and is quit, narrow and bendy. It's OK for Syrians but not sure if a climbing dwarf ham would stay in it.

It's usually better to remove the Penthouse and tubes and keep that top door closed :-) The cage comes with caps that cap off the tube holes. Then it's just a standard cage.
