Hey all!

I kept the same username as my Hamster Hideout Forum username; I've not had hamsters for some years now, but I miss them dearly and I've always loved having conversations about the finer points of quality hamster (and other animal) care.

If you were on HH back in the day, hello!! I've missed you all so much!

I have quite a bit of hamster knowledge in my head, but I'm very excited to update my care standards and hopefully be helpful around here sometime.

Very happy to be here. <3

Hello and welcome :-) I was on HH and another forum but not a regular :-) It's partly why this one was started when HH closed down. It's great having you here and I'm sure your hamster knowledge will be really helpful to others. Especially new owners when they join :-) Are you thinking of getting another hamster now? :-) A lot has changed in the last few years! Although hamsters haven't changed!

Hi! I was also on HH but not particularly active, certainly not around the moment it sadly went down. Good to have you back! :D

Thanks for the warm welcome!

Definitely thinking about getting another hamster. Been staring down the bin cage I have in my basement... would be so easy to just fill it back up with bedding and toys and get a little friend to love! It's a double bin cage - I took two large bins and cut/glued them so it's one big space. (ignore the mess - the photo's from 2019 :P )

I'm currently focused on researching the best current foods - if I remember correctly, I fed Vitakraft Vitasmart and Mazuri Rat/Mouse back in the day, but I think their ingredients have changed, so that may no longer be a good combo. Looks like Higgins Sunburst is still a good option, though!

Glad to hear you were on HH! Thanks for making a new place for us; there was so much good information lost when that forum was deleted. I'm very, very happy to see all the folks on here sharing their knowledge and experience :)

Hi. Your image didn't upload unfortunately - on here you need to use the "Attach files" button at the bottom of the post and you can just upload directly from your phone or computer :-) No need to resize anything, the site does that automatically.

Whoops! Hoping that fixed it. Thanks!

Yes that fixed it :-) That bin cage is amazing! Do you have a tutorial on how you made it?

It's a bit quiet at the moment - summer holidays - but I'm sure others will be along soon!

Food - there's an article with recommended foods on I'll link below - there are others as well. I think Mazuri went out of fashion for some reason! Along with the more natural mixes coming in. The only reason Higgins Sunburst isn't on it is because Vita Garden is on there! I think Sunburst has sugars maybe? It's always debatable and people (and hamsters) have their preferences! The Bunny Nature mix is available in the US now, but only from Chewy.com I think.
