Hamster Qs!

He is very cute and sounds like he is very organised.

Thank you! We also tried a litter tray (with hamster litter in), put in in very near his nest and when he discovered it you'd think we'd released a bunch of eagles near his cage!! Second ever peeved angry squeak, trying to eat the sides, digging the litter (in a most irritated way!) and I think the clear plastic bottom annoyed him even more. Not a success haha. I even rubbed it in his bedding first and put some wee soaked shavings and poo in. We took it out and he seemed much relieved! I know he doesnt mind 'new things' as I got him some additional tubes, hides and hes LOVED them.

Was trying to encourage him to wee outside his nest as he's weeing and pooing in there currently. So, now I'm thinking to try a sandbath in it instead?? (he doesnt have one yet). We bought some hamster sand....
I'm having trouble potty training Luna, too. Right now she pees in her exercise wheel :(
My past hamsters potty trained quick; I used SoPhresh potty training pellets and they were potty trained in days https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petco...pdT4P50xMKWYGTeu-3RoCQwgQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Not sure that they have anything like that where you are?

We usually recommend not using potter litter in case they try to eat it, as these things are usually clay based and can swell up inside. They are also scented sometimes and hamsters can be quite overpowered by scented things or be sensitive to them.

You can just put sand in a litter tray :-) The sand soaks up the pee and the potty/litter tray can just be emptied once or twice a week. Some people just sift out the wet bit with a small sieve, rather than replacing all the sand each time.

If you haven't had her long, I would wait a bit to find out where her chosen toilet is. She will be peeing somewhere else as well as her wheel. If you can't smell it yet I wouldn't worry! When you find out where she is peeing you can put the litter tray near there, and put a tiny bit of the smelly pee substrate on top of the sand so she knows it's her toilet. Sometimes a good place to put a corner litter tray is inside a large house - they seem to like having an ensuite bathroom :-)
