Hamster parachute …….

I think some of us do have photos of hamsters on keyboards :ROFLMAO: For some reason hamsters seem attracted to keyboards and walk all over them. I've had the odd nerve-wracking moment hoping the hamster didn't suddenly decide to pee on the keyboard (computers and liquid lead to dead laptop!)
Ooh I miss that old laptop!

I’d never thought of the issues of wee! I usually end up with a cat typing nonsense!

Blossom could have done with a parachute when she escaped while I was on holiday…it’s quite a drop from the sideboard where her cage is to the floor 🤦‍♀️
You see…….. I knew there was a market for this! 😂😂😂. I hope Blossom was ok and learnt not to be so adventurous!

Orpheus definitely needs one for vet visits. As they don’t seem to have any rooms safe for skirmy hammies and last week fell 6 ft onto the floor because escaping from scary vet tech gloves. Thank god he survived unharmed and was at the vet. It was a well visit. :( Needless to say never going back there. Count me in for second or third round testing. Another idea - hamster elevator. For when your hammy needs a little help and kind of know where he is. Thoughts?

That was a nightmare visit, how awful 😞 I always worry about my skittish pets going off the table. It would be so nice if vet surgeries had rodent exam rails for their table to prevent something horrible happening. Glad that Orpheus is OK, but still not nice 🙁 Sometimes you can feel a bit of warmth through the cage or carrier base, but that's easier with Syrians I think.

I have a contraption I take to the vets with small hammies - I’ll see if I can find the photo later - it’s basically a rub bin that’s about 8” high and maybe 50cm x 40cm. I take it with me and have a piece of hemp mat cut to fit the bottom, And take a tube and a flying saucer in a bag. The hanster is in a guinea pig sized pet carrier in a snooze cube. I put the bin on the vet table with the hemp mat on the base, put the saucer and tube in and just lift out the snooze cube with the hamster in and put that down in the bin. No stress for the hamster and they can’t jump off the vet table - the hamster can run around a bit in the bin - vet can have a look at them that way - if they have to pick the hamster up they can do it over the bin.

LOVE the idea of a hamster elevator!

My blind miniature schnauzer used to be examined on the floor so that he couldn't fall off the table!
He did occasionally bump into chair legs at the vets too which made all the nurses go 'aww 😍' lol. Bumping into things very slowly was one of his ways of finding his way around.

Aww. And thanks for the tip. He hasn't properly gotten his back coat in sand for 8 days and he is starting to look greasy and itch tons on cam. Plan to put a mini sand bath next to wheel and see if he gets the message better. Any other ideas?

Robos love their sand baths - he definitely needs one in his cage all the time :-)

He does. A beautiful huge one from Nightangel. Which is why we’re concerned…He didn’t have one constantly at the rescue place, where they’d provide it three times a week, but he seemed to be starting to get the idea for himself until recently. Mostly when we put him in his playpen with a smaller one. But we’re not sure if he’s ready for that again. Trying not to get paranoid about mites in general…but don’t think had had fur loss and likely just so dirty uncomfortable, the poor little dude.

Ok so, I was thinking about my current issue, of small critters flying out of wheels, and I had one of those crazy thoughts. Then I read listed I’d spotted a gap in the market!

Hamster parachutes!!!

Not only could they be useful for flying out the wheel issues, it solves the falling off high ledge issues too! What a brain wave! Anyone want to join me in creating and marketing this essential bit of equipment?

First off, we need a design. A few important points
1) it has to be small enough not to impede hammy going about his daily business
2) it has to be robust enough to withstand the rigours of daily hamster life, whilst being comfortable and not rubbing. I suspect it needs to be adjustable, so v small buckles etc
3) we probably need at least 2, probably 3 - 4 different sizes to cover Dwarf to Syrian with Chinese and Robo too (plus other small critters that fall off things)
4) we are going to need to develop microscopic sensors so the parachute opens only when the hamster falls
5) it’s going to need to release after it’s opened, so hammy doesn’t get tangled

Ok, who’s in?
I am!!! Peanut got out of our sandbath playpen (which has been hamster-proof per Luna for months) fell to the floor, got across the living room and over a 17" high metal barrier to Luna, my other Syrian! He broke a leg in the process and is now a "tripod for love". If he got Luna pregnant, we are going to have a SERIOUS TALK about proper hammie behavior.
