Hello, i was really hoping someone could offer advice on good syrian hamster food mix in canada or websites that could possibly send to canada. The food i offer her now doesn’t have enough protein (and can’t seem to find any luck finding food that does) - So i do offer eggs and mealworms but I 100% would prefer if i could find a full complete food mix that already offers all the nutrients. (Of course i’d still offer other foods but i want a good base) thank you! (:

Hello & welcome to the forum.

It’s quite hard to find hamster food that has enough protein in most countries & we do often have to supplement especially with younger hamsters.
I’m not really sure what is available in Canada but you can get Hazel Hamster which is the same as Harry Hamster in the UK & a food many people use.
I found some here although it appears to be out of stock on that site it may be available elsewhere.

Someone else might know, I’m not really well up on US hamster foods any more but some of those might be available in Canada too.

Hello and welcome to the forum. Your hamster is adorable!

I do not think there are any complete mixes but Higgins Vita Garden is one of the better mixes and you are doing a great job of adding your own protein. Perhaps your hamster may like nuts too. My hamster loves pine nuts and walnuts. :)

Hello and welcome :) Your hamster is gorgeous! Ok so I think quite a few US members get the Getzoo mix from Etsy shipped over. Whether they ship to Canada as well I'm not sure. The Getzoo mix (a German mix) is very good although I believe the protein still needs supplementing. It might be a bit of an expensive option though.

There's a link here that lists Getzoo mixes on Etsy - maybe check them out and see if any ship to Canada? However as Elusive says, you can probably get Harry or Hazel Hamster (the contents are the same despite different labelling) and that does contain everything a Syrian hamster needs and the correct levels of protein and it's sugar free. It maybe doesn't have as much variety as some mixes but you can give healthy treats as well :)

Wrong link - I'll see if I can find the right one!

Here you go. According to Getzoo website they do ship to Canada. Whether that's affordable or not is another matter! You'd need to check by putting something in the basket and going part way through checkout.

They have two Syrian hamster mixes. A basic one (which they say you need to add your own protein) and a standard one which includes mealworms and other insect larvae for protein.

I would think the second one would be best. But it would still be an idea to give some protein extras as treats like the occasional nut or hard boiled egg or freeze dried chicken. Just in case the hamster doesn't eat the insect larvae!

This food isn't cheap though and 500g isn't an enormous bag. If you decided to get it, it's probably worth getting a few bags to save on postage.

For our Syrian I use a 50/50 mix of Harry Hamster and Bunny Dream Syrian Hamster food.

The Bunny Dream is very good. That is sold by a Belgian company called Vetsend - I'll check and see if they ship to Canada too. The reason I mix them is sometimes Syrians prefer the larger pieces and whole peanuts in the Harry Hamster whereas the Bunny Dream is much smaller pieces (but very healthy and smells nice!).

It says "International" at the bottom of the web page for Vetsend, but only shows European countries - you could email them and ask if they ship to Canada.

Not sure if I got my calculations right but Getzoo delivery would be about $50 if I did!

Oh my goodness! That's ridiculous. What did you do - put some food in the basket and select Canada?

Delivery info link is at the bottom of the page on Getzoo & there’s a list of prices for different countries.

Ok I see it. It'll be customs duties add to the cost. It says up to 5kg weight is 39.90 euros - which does convert to about $42.66!

However when I put some in the basket and select country from a drop down menu I can't see Canada on the list. But USA is on it.

I've emailed Vetsend to see what they say about shipping to Canada.

If these European ones are unaffordable then as Rainbow Suggested Higgins Vita Garden is probably about the best (which would need protein supplementing). Or Harry/Hazel Hamster - if it's available. Or mixing those two 50/50 and adding a few science selective pellets to increase the protein. I would still give protein treats though as well.

Science selective is an all in one pellet diet, which contains everything needed. It's not great on it's own really as a pellet diet, but can increase the protein level of another mix. Just giving 2 or 3 pellets a day as treats would be fine. Hamsters seem to like them. It's very useful for older hamsters though as the pellets can be softened for a sick or elderly hamster who can't eat very well.

Even that's expensive in Canada though - presumably import charges again.

Not sure which one you're feeding at the moment, but this Versele Laga Nature sounds ok as well. It contains 18% protein so you wouldn't need to supplement. It does contain some dried fruit, but that is ok for Syrians.

Yes, it is quite hard to find food that has decent shipping charges. Even on etsy or amazon. But i’m going to look into the hazel hamsters and the vita garden one because i haven’t yet seen that in stores. I heard about this food a while back and seen it on amazon but the replies said the bag is so tiny for the price. But i’ll try my search again haha, thank you so much!

Let us know how you get on :)

Okay, i managed to find both the Versele Laga Nature and science selective hamster food at a store near me. I think i will buy both and mix them!

I'm sure you meant "wasn't" malnourished lol. I think it sounds like a good solution - there is no need to spend a fortune shipping european mixes. There is no need to supplement protein with those two mixed, which makes things easier. Although the occasional fresh treat or extra always goes down well. Giving a very tiny piece of fresh veg daily is good for them. A bit of cucumber or tiny broccoli floret goes down well or a couple of defrosted frozen peas. They love their fresh veg and look for it every day :-) Just a really small amount so they eat it straight away and don't hoard it (they usually do eat it straight away). I used to say approx 1cm cubed size but saw a better description on a hamster food site recently which was "no bigger than your hamster's ear"!
