Hamster mixes 2026

I was going to suggest the Mixerama to you but didn’t because I thought Mr Maggie was a girl at the time - considering her recent issues - but as she’s a boy I think it’s a very good option. The protein level is actually quite good in this mix so it wouldn’t need a lot of supplementing. Personally I would give half a shelled walnut twice a week (also a treat) and maybe a bit of scrambled or chopped boiled egg once or twice a week. During his first year. Once they are a year old the protein level is about right without any need to supplement )although the occasional walnut treat usually goes down well anyway).

Thanks Maz. I think I might go for it and see what like. If I order now I can freeze and be sure it’s here ready for when Hammykins is finished.

As much as the Hammykins smells and looks devine I just can’t live with the beetroot pee!

I just opened the science selective tonight- for some reason I thought they were going to be tiny wee pellets.

I’ve not put any in just yet in case they are a bit big and scratchy while

How would you suggest supplementing protein if using the mixerama?

Thinking I might try this after the Hammykins as it looks lovely and the pink pee we seem to be getting from the beetroot and other red veg in HK is slightly off putting…

I would double check about the pink pee as mine have been on hammykins forever and I have never seen pink pee. Just to be safe

Oh and an update on the red clover,very easy to pick out as they are quite large. Apparently they would have the same effect on us women too

Glad they are easy to pick out Yes I was aware it was a herb for women - possibly helpful during the menopause or for fertility - increases oestrogen or something. I think that and Raspberry Leaf are the two to avoid with female hamsters (just my opinion) for the uterine effects. They may be fine as long as a hamster isn't pregnant or has had any hormonal issues previously, if it's a uterine tonic, but personally I'd be cautious with hamsters - even if it is just a tiny bit. They are medicinal herbs, not just flowers. Likewise parsley is a medicinal herb which is helpful! And thyme is antiseptic.

They should be tiny wee pellets! Is it definitely the hamster science selective you have? They make it for other species as well. I just put 3 soaked pellets out for Tino tonight and they are very small.

first sign of it was straight after switching over to Hammykins (and after a baytril injection)

I picked out all the beetroot and dried red veg and pee returned to normal. As soon as I’ve gone back to feeding it straight from the bag with all the red veg in his pee is once again pink.

I checked with Hammykins directly and they said it can happen (a bit like with humans!)

Yup! definitely hamster… says ideal for dwarf hamsters but I can’t see them being able to eat this…!

Maybe it’s a dud batch (seems to be my luck!) as lots of clumps too

Yes those look right. They shouldn't be stuck together though. I don't think any of mine are (although haven't looked through the whole packet). Maybe they got warm somewhere in storage? Presumably they can be broken apart?

Yes- you can break them apart. I just assumed they would be properly tiny like the pellets in the HH tasty mix.

It looks like these have been subjected to moisture somehow. They shouldn't be this large,or.clumped.

I will contact the seller to report the issue with the science selective.

Re: pink pee- I don't think its hugely common as most people rave about hammykins that I can see and do not mention it as an issue, but if you google it, there are folk who report the same from feeding Beetroot or other fruit/veg containing Beta carotene. Even red whimzees apparently can cause it. It gave me a fright but there is a clear link to pee colour for him depending on if the red veggies are in his bowl or not.

I've been using the Hamster Helper mix the last week or so, mixed in with their usual mix. Higgins seems to eat it fine. Tino didn't seem too keen, but then he's maybe a bit more set in his ways and preferring soft food at the moment. It seems fine but I think I prefer the Mixerama one for the larger pieces and now I know I can get it cheaper I'll stick with that!

I order the "Hamfetti" mix from Happy Hamstery. I sometimes use it every other day with another commercial mix. Oaky liked a Vita Prima hamster mix that I'd found in a local Pet store, but I feel like I heard a mid-review of it at some point in our forum, and I've run out of it, so I'm looking to try something new to alternate with Hamfetti. I just found that Chewy in the U.S. sells the Bunny brand hamster mixes, so I'm going to try that out and to the "every other day" variance with my Hamfetti mix.
