Angel Eyes

Guys Dash has escaped! Sometime last night. Stupid me left his door loose by accident. I put Food, Treats, Water, and a Tissue box with Tissue ripped up in it. Please what are the chances I find him? Be honest. 😭😭

There is every chance you will find him. What kind of home do you have? Do you have holes that could lead to the outside? It was a good idea putting out food and drinks for him as this will entice him. Is it possible to put down some flour because if he is around you will see his little paw prints.

How are things toady? Has he eaten any of the treats?

I'm so sorry to hear this but have heard of many hamsters who were found so stay positive. Go on the Home page and read up on the section 'How to catch an escaped hamster'.

So sorry to hear this Angel Eyes, it is a very scary time when this happens, but there are things you can do. He is probably snug somewhere in the house. As Beryl says there is a whole article about what to do if a hamster escapes and a number of things you can do. I've linked it below. But if the doors weren't closed and you don't know where he is in the house, then the first thing to do is put his cage on the floor with the door open and some kind of ramp leading up to it and maybe a trail of sunflower seeds or food leading to the ramp and up it. And also set a bucket trap in another room. And listen carefully for noises in the evening (it might give you a clue as to which room to set the bucket trap in.

Many of us have had things like this (I left a cage door open all night once). I've had this happen 2 or 3 times and the bucket trap worked each time (on one occasion the hamster just went back into his cage on the floor).

With the bucket trap you can hear when it's worked as the ruler or piece of wood clatters when it falls and you can go down and retrieve the hamster. Do you have a nightcam? That can help as you can point it at the cage on the floor and sit in bed and watch on your phone, then if he goes back in the cage you can nip down and close the door.

They nearly always home back to their nest and wheel and the bucket trap can work quite quickly, once all the lights are out and it's dark and they find the food.

I live in a 2 Bedroom apartment. No holes to outside as far as I know. We have other pets so the flour would probably make a huge mess unfortunately. No treats gone. 😭

Thank You I will try that

Stupid question i know but have you checked his cage?

I came home once from work to be met by an upset OH telling me that he can't find our dwarf Edwina who must have escaped after he had left her cage door open overnight by mistake.

I checked Edwina's cage and found her asleep in the depth of her substrate.

I have yes he is not there.

I really hope you find him. He may be hiding in a place like a shoe that you would not think of looking. Please keep us updated.

It does sound like he is securely in the apartment somewhere. And it's a matter of finding and catching him - and he will look for food. My concern would be your other pets. Is it possible to keep them confined to one room in the meantime? A room the hamster is least likely to have got into (eg if the door was shut to that room? Even if they don't find and hurt him, their smell may scare him away from coming out of his hiding place.

I will. I have went through my apartment with a fine tooth comb. I am heartbroken.💔

I turned a room upside down once looking for a hamster and didn't find him. They are very good at quietly and sneakily moving from one place to another and may be under something you have already looked under, or curled up asleep in a jumper somewhere or under a cushion eg.

A bucket trap should bring him out after dark and catch him but it helps to know which room to set it in. Tonight you need to listen for noises, the slightest noise or scratching noise. Also leave water out as he'll need to drink.

What other pets do you have in the house? Unless you find him curled up asleep somewhere today, you won't be able to catch him till after dark probably as he will be asleep somewhere.

We have 3 cats and two small bedrooms I don't think I can keep them in there to long.

3 cats

I am so sorry but there is every chance he is safe. I bet he is hiding and having a nice sleep and does not even realise you are looking for him.

Do you have a friend who could keep your 3 cats for a few days to give Dash a chance?
