Hi, I'm planning on getting a hamster soon and have been looking for a suitable cage. Does anyone think that this cage would be good for a hamster? Are there any better cages for a cheaper price?

Hello and welcome. I haven't seen that one before but it looks good :) It looks very similar to the Holzart which also comes from Germany I think. Are you in Germany?

It looks the same to me and I was informed that the Holzart is well made with good thick wood. £169.90 isn't cheap however. And most people paint wood cages with petsafe waterproofing paint which is an extra thing to pay for/do. What species of hamster is it for? There are barred cages that cost less and perspex tanks around the same price.

There's a list of 100cm plus cages here :-)

Hello and welcome to the forum. I would personally go for a Rodipet one. The one you linked would need the steps removed in order to fill it up with bedding. Here is a link for you. :)

There is also this company in Germany too.

If it's the same as the Holzart (it does look the same!) The shelves and steps don't need to be attached when you put it together. They're optional :-). The rodipet one is good but costs more I think. That second link of Rainbows is very good! Are you in the Uk? I notice the price was quoted in pounds.

Thanks for all of your replies! I am in the UK. I'll look into the Rodipet cage too, as it will have space for deeper bedding.

Have a look at the list I linked :) The Bucatstate is quite popular as well - but not cheap. Some of the barred cages are less expensive, like the new Savic Plaza 120, which is huge! Bigger than 100 x 50. The base doesn't hold deep bedding but you can get creative to adapt it so it does. If you put perspex panels round the inside though, it can cost as much as a Bucatstate. You could use cardboard or grass mats tied to the inside of the bars instead though. But it does depend what species of hamster you're getting.

Also that Holzart I linked (it's on the cages thread) is much cheaper if bought from the link on the thread!

Do you know which species of hamster you are adopting?
I haven't decided yet, but possibly one of the dwarf species. From what I have heard, they are (slightly) easier to please than Syrian hamsters and less likely to become unhappy in their enclosure. Obviously this depends on the individual hamster, too.

Thank you! 😀 The Bucatstate looks like a good option - I do like how all the sides are acrylic. It looks like a good size for a dwarf hamster.
I noticed that the bar spacing of the Savic cage is almost 1cm. Would this be too big for a dwarf hamster?

I have had a dwarf and a robo and they have both been wonderful. I do not know where about you are in the UK but we have a list of hamster rescues on here.

Thanks! I am not yet looking for a hamster - still researching and gathering supplies - but this will be useful for when I am ready to adopt one.

I love that you are doing your research. I researched and bought everything I needed for about one year before adopting mine. :)

I wouldn’t say dwarfs or Syrians are easier than each other really - they’re just different! I’ve had quite a few Syrians and a couple of robos. Syrians do tend to sleep all day and come out later, whereas some dwarfs or robos will get up during the day - but not all.

It very much depends on the hamster’s personality. I’ve had some shy Syrians who need tempting out of the cage but once they’re out they are quite active and get to know you and bond with you. But only want to come out once or twice a week. I’ve had two quite maverick male Syrians (including the current one) who want to be out every night and are very active and use every inch of their cage.

Robos are notoriously difficult to handle and tame due to being so fast and the most scared of the species generally.

Female Syrians are notorious for needing a lot of space and even 100 x 50 might not be big enough for some of them.

So with Syrians, sex and personality come into it. If getting one from a rescue they can usually tell you what type of personality a hamster has. If from somewhere else then you can observe their behaviour.

I don’t know which part of the Uk you’re in but a rescue near London currently has at least two litters of Syrians to rehome!

There are a few IKEA Detolf cages for sale on Gumtree and Facebook Marketplace but you do need a large area as it’s a glass display cabinet turned on its side. I opted for one and got it for £80 on Marketplace and my Dwarf Russian (Rio) loves it. I’ve sectioned it off into different areas and it’s easy to keep.
I hope you get your new setup soon and can enjoy your new hamster. Rio loves showing off and is out various times during the day so I see him often.

That's good to know Rio's Mum :)

The cage looks nice, i think the bedding room could be a little deeper though since they love to burrow. Maybe a bit larger, but i didn’t look at the square inches. What hamster are you getting?
