I think that sounds an idea. Our first Hamster Charlie went on like this for some time. I’d get him out for a cuddle thinking he was dying and he’d suddenly come round again and get active. It’s not an easy time.

Sometimes though you want to feel sure. If he is failing, that’s ok. And it could be time. If he shows signs of pain then it’s a different scenario. My vet said there had been recent research on signs of pain - as well as ears flat or hunching over there was a look around the eyes as if they were drawn back and looked a bit squinty - eg as if the skin had been pulled back behind the eyes.

He may just be failing generally rather than visibly having pain.

Cuddles tonight sounds a good thing.

Thank you. We’ve just had some little strokes and a nice chat and he’s taken a piece of apple from me. What you’ve just described with Charlie is exactly how it feels. One minute I’m thinking I need to help him on his way with the vet and the next he seems more alert. His ears are down but he’s not hunched, he’s laying pretty relaxed at the mo and his breathing looks steady, will get a better look at his eyes tomorrow.

Just one other thing to add. And this might sound strange. But if he's having a bad patch, sometimes you just need to say to them - it's ok to go if you want to. There is a bond there and they do kind of hang on for you sometimes. In my opinion. Now I know that sounds strange as it's words - but they can pick up things from your tone perhaps.

I've done this before too and with my guinea pigs. It's so hard but I think they don't want to go sometimes as they feel they need to stay for us.

It sounds like you are doing everything right. All my older Hamsters seem to love soaked nuggets. He knows he's loved and safe with you. He's a gorgeous boy.
