Hammy

I’m glad he is enjoying his linseeds. It’s a worry isn’t it? I hope it all goes ok on Monday.

It’s hard having to wait when you’re worried about Hams but I hope it goes well at the vet tomorrow.

I hope all goes well at the vets for Hams.
Sending hugs from Albert and me 🐹🤗💕

I also hope everything goes well at the vets. I will be thinking of you and Hams.

Ditto everyone else's thoughts, hope he's doing okay

Hi all, the vet spent a long time with us today which I really appreciated. Ham was quite vocal which we never usually hear. He was a good boy considering all the upheaval of being handled more than usual, having his tummy, side and back all checked, weighed and a good look at his tail, which is sadly showing signs of lump growth again and could be the reason he's just not feeling himself.

Vet has suggested we try a course of Rheumocam, the smallest dose possible to start with once a day. It's an anti inflammatory and see if this helps him in anyway. ❤️

Sounds like Hams had a very good check-up by the vet. I hope the Rheumocam helps Hams get better. 🐹💕

The vet sounds lovely which must have really helped. I hope the medication helps Hams to feel more comfortable. You did the right thing in taking him to the vet.

Sorry to hear that Hams tail appears to be showing signs of inflammation or growth again, it does sound as though the vet did a very thorough check so hopefully the meds will help him feel better in himself.

I’ve never come across the name Rheumocam before but it’s metacam which is the usual treatment for pain or inflammation.

Poor Hams - he clearly found it a bit stressful, but it's done now. I haven't heard of Rheumocam either and just looked it up. The EMA says

"Rheumocam contains the active substance meloxicam and is a generic medicine. This means that
Rheumocam contains the same active substance and works in the same way as a ‘reference medicine’
already authorised in the European Union (EU) called Metacam."

It may help Hams if he is having any pain or discomfort, but let us know what dose they prescribe. Sometimes people need to double check the dose with the vets.

Hi all, thank you, I did mention Metacam, so good to hear this is a similar medicine. I googled it myself but didn’t find this, thank you. They just advised that Hams should have eaten before giving it, so I guess putting it in a tiny amount of baby food would work.

It does say Meloxicam on the front as well. The dose suggested is 0.1ml once a day at roughly the same time.

I was going to start it tomorrow as I don’t think he’ll be coming near me tonight after this mornings trip.

I’m not sure what the dose is for a Syrian but putting it on baby food should be fine, they usually like the taste of metacam.

Thanks Elusive, kinda hoping if it is just aches and pains this will help him. The vet thinks we leave his tail going forward due to his age and the fact he’s not trying to nibble at it himself, indicating it’s likely not bothering him.

I’m just going to focus on our usual routine, lots of lap cuddles/strokes and letting him have a few extra treats 🙂

That sounds about right. It varies with the weight of the hamster. If you put it on baby food he won't need to come near you :-) I hope it helps him.

Or a tiny bit of mashed banana maybe? If you don't have baby food in.

I think he’d probably very much like banana 😀. He lapped the baby food up last night, didn’t seem to think anything of it other than yum, yum, yum. (I’ve placed the rest into ice cube trays and will defrost one each day 👍)

That’s great that Hams is enjoying the baby food & not bothered about the meds.

Hi all, sadly I don’t think the Rheumocam has made much difference to Hams. His ears are still down and his eyes sleepy and he’s resting/sleeping more and more. It’s so sad to see, I really wasn’t expecting him to slow up quite so dramatically. We are due back to the vet Monday for a two week check up, but I think I’m just going to call them for a chat as trying to coax Ham out of his nest is not easy and the trips are quite stressful for him. I think the vet may suggest trying a bigger dose of the Rheumocam for an extra week or maybe he won’t as I really don’t see it’s made any difference at this point.

Each evening I’m just sitting by his cage with the door open and chatting. Eventually and with the smell of the shelled hemp seeds, (which have been a great hit, thanks Maz!) he comes out to say hello. I give him a little stroke and he then just returns to his nest. Tonight he only picked up two bits of food then went straight back. It kinda feels like I’m losing him already 🫤 He rarely wants to come out of his cage now, but nice he feels safe and comfy in his home. Just feels like he’s living a half life from my once crazy little buddy.

I am so sorry Zara. It’s so hard when they become like this. What dose of Metacam is he on? They normally just have the one dose so I’m not sure how the vet could increase it unless they started with a lower than usual dose.

It may still be helping to keep him comfortable.

I think it’s a good idea to try a phone call rather than taking him to the vets again as it will be stressful.

It’s hard when you’re watching each day. Good that he likes the hemp seeds :-). I think you would know if he has had enough.
