Hammy

He does look like he's having fun. Sorry Zara! I forgot he already had a thread . When I suggested a thread for Hammy. Silly me.

His coat looks lovely and thick and furry.

We had some giggles last night. After making a brief appearance at 8ish, I asked Hams if he wanted to come out luring him with a tiny piece of cucumber and after eating that and having a wash in his tissue box, he gladly stepped out and was thrilled he was having proper in the front room roam time.

As he's grown older and we've become best buddies I feel much calmer letting him out for a roam. He still has to be watched closely but he's not quite so mischievous now. I guess because he's more used to his surroundings also and when he wants to go home he simply tips his plastic jug over and sits in it.

With him in the front room being watched I've placed the box around his cage to stop any draughts and potentially keep him a bit warmer. On his return he slowly moved around taking a look then when he saw all was well, he stuffed his cheeks and went back to bed.

Aw lovely he had some roaming and the box will help keep him warm :-) Raffy isn't even out yet. Yawn. He might need to miss a night. He's been out for food but not banging on the bars yet.

Tonight I’ve added some blankets in the gap. They sit well below the start of the bars so he cannot chew through and I’ve wedged some cardboard on the top under the shelf bolts to keep it all pushed down and secure. Hoping this will give him some extra insulation.

Oh bless, the cooler temperatures are definitely keeping them in their beds. I’ve noticed Hams coming out a bit earlier to look around for food but then appearing much later to stretch his legs. Although I’m still awake tonight, I’m not usually a night owl myself, so he’s not been out so often recently.

Good that he accepted the box ok :)

Lovely to read an update on Hams.

His home looks very cosy and the box is a great idea. It should keep the drafts out.

I'm glad it met his approval after a good sniffing inspection.

I love how you and Hams have bonded now. Reading your journey together has been so lovely. :)

HAPPY 1ST BIRTHDAY HAMS I’m a bit late with an update but we celebrated Hams 1st birthday a week ago Sunday. We made a couple of oaty treats from Beryls receipe on this forum and we added some sunflower seeds and a bit of apple. They we’re only the size of a 10p piece and he really liked them. He had his usual run about but with a hidden peanut in its shell which is his absolute favourite and a little play in his new rat tubes. My daughter made a fab little bday video but I can’t seem to attach it at the moment. I’ll keep tryimg 🙂

Happy belated birthday Hams! All grown up! He is looking very well. Is that a cake box in front of him?

Thank you, Ha, ha, yes that's an old meringue box. He loves all boxes. I've a great collection for his playpen 👍

Happy Birthday Hams!
Looks like Hams had a great birthday.
Love the photos 😍

Happy birthday precious boy! He really has grown and become so confident. I would love to see the video your daughter made. If you upload it to youtube then you can just put a link here. :)

It was a chilly one again last night. How are all the hamsters doing?

When I came downstairs today it was unusual for Hams to be up but he didn't run away from me as I talked quietly to him, so I opened his enclosure slowly and offered him a seed which he accepted. Then as I've been a bit concerned at keeping him warm overnight I took the opportunity as he wasn't in his bed to slide my hand on to the top of his shoebox where he sleeps between a load of kaytee that I've now got on top as well, for extra warmth and was so relieved I could feel a lovely warm spot where he has been sleeping below. This has given me some reassurance that he's keeping toasty in his nest. Phew! 🙂

It is lovely to have an update on Hams. You have really bonded and how wonderful he took a seed from you.😀 I have not noticed any difference in Okos behaviour but it is about 17c here at the coldest.

It is a bit worrying isn’t it. It was sub zero temperatures here last night. Our house has a lot of draughts so I left the electric clothes drier on all night - it hardly gives out much heat but keeps it from being freezing cold. I think it’s definitely time for snugglesafes or hot water bottles! Depending where you live and what your house is like!

At least it meant not needing to turn the heating on in the morning! And now it’s sunny so hopefully the ice will melt.

I am also juggling between worry about electricity bill and not letting the hamsters freeze! There is another room I could move them to which is insulated and doesn’t get too cold - but then they’d be too hot in there with the heating on and it’s in use at the moment and wouldn’t go down well with the humans! So electric clothes drier it is!

Yes we are getting lovely bright days with cooler nights. I thought it was around -3 last night. The room Hams is in currently says 14 but the heating has come on now so it will warm up. I brought one of the little thermometers that was mentioned on here and its just arrived so will be interesting to see how the temperature fluctuates downstairs tonight. If it gets too cold we will move Hams into one of our bedrooms as his wheel is pretty quiet these days. I think he’d be more shocked by the other half’s snoring to be honest! The problem I have with the kids is the spraying of deodorants which they’d have to stop as I don’t think this would be good for him. So I think he’d probably be better of with us if needs be.
