Hair loss advice?

I'm sure you'll soon fatten him up :-) Does he seem to enjoy his food? And seem well enough in himself and active?

With his history and the current fur loss, I think it would be safer to use a commercial mix with him. A commercial mix contains fortified vitamins and minerals and most of these natural mixes don't. Although they are supposedly balanced out with the calculations, most of them have a disclaimer to say they don't contain the fortified vitamins etc.
Do you think Harry Hamster would work? Or should I shop for something higher quality?

That's rather a lot of supplements we have suggested, so you may need to pick and choose a bit!

I would go with

Pinch of linseeds daily
Pinch of hemp seeds daily
A bit of hard boiled egg once or twice a week
A tiny piece of fresh veg each day (green veg ideally like cucumber or broccoli)
Occasional pumpkin seed treats
Half a walnut once a week
Elusive's suggestion of a drop of Evening Primrose oil daily if you can

Or if you're going to go with the Dr S vitamin supplements then skip the pinch of hemp seeds. I use the hemp seeds instead of added vitamins.

If you do go for added vitamins, it's important not to put them in the hamster's water as it can put them off drinking.

I use 50/50 Harry Hamster and Bunny Dream Hamster food :-) It's perfectly fine. It may not have as much variety as others, but it contains everything needed and has good sized pieces for Syrians. I find the mixes with the very small bits in, Syrians sometimes leave a lot of it. Mind you sometimes they leave a lot anyway. So I get the Bunny Dream for the variety (and it smells really nice!) and the Harry Hamster for the basic mix.

When the pandemic first started, Harry Hamster was the only thing you could get hold of! So I went back to using it then back to 50/50 when I could get the Bunny Dream mix again.

I hope all goes well for Louie at the vets tomorrow. Please update us when you have time.

That sounds good to have a checkover. If they suggest it could be mites, I would advise asking them to do a skin scraping to be sure, because some vets just prescribe without testing and the medication is quite strong for hamsters so it's better to be sure they need it.

Will do!

Just left the vets, the appointment went so well! He didn't mind getting handled and health checked :)
The vet said that it's highly likely that it's to do with a vitamin B deficiency, and that I should do what I was planning to do, which is to switch him to a 50/50 Harry Ham and his current mix diet, to ensure that he's not missing out on anything.

He has no redness, flaky skin, etc, it's just the fur loss. She said that it's highly unlikely to be anything else because of this. I did ask if he could have skin scraping to rule out mites, but she told me that it's extremely unlikely because he isn't itchy, etc at all, and has absolutely no other symptoms of mites. I decided to take her advice, and continue what I'm doing. I just picked up the Harry Hamster mix, too- so he can get started on that right away :)

She told me that if I do what she's said and there's no regrowth and/or he gets worse, that I should take him back and then it would be appropriate for a skin scraping. But again, she said that the likelihood of this being the case is very low.

And of course, I'm looking to increase the Vitamin B in his diet with seeds, etc :)

She sounds like a good vet :) I think things will resolve naturally with the right diet as well and the linseeds and hemp seeds will help :). I think it took 2 to 3 months of daily linseeds for fur regrowth when I did this, but sometimes it's quicker :)

Another thought - do his teeth look ok? You can look next time he yawns :-) Sometimes if there are missing or overgrown teeth, they can't eat properly and that can lead to malnutrition as well.

Yes, she also had a look at 'em, they're fine:)

She does sound like a good vet & that is pretty much what I would have expected her to find given the underfeeding.
Using the Harry hamster now is a good plan, I would also use the vitamin supplement for a while at least to be sure he’s getting all the vitamins he hasn’t been having for quite a while, the evening primrose oil should help the fur to grow back more quickly & healthily along with the linseeds too.

Thank you for the update. It is so good to hear the appointment went well and you have a good vet. 😊

Good to hear the vet visit went well. Has Louie settled back in his cage okay?

I'm really looking forward to following Louie's progress :-) He's lucky to have you.

That's good news and your vet sounds like a knowledgeable and sensible person.
Thank you for the update.
