Feeding - how much and how often?

I read that some people feed new feed whenever the bowl is empty. my russian dwarf hoards a lot, when i give a full bowl (about 20grams) it is all gone in a couple hours. I have tried to fill up again, but she keeps hoarding everything, pees on it, and then i have to throw it away. what would be the best feeding routine? i know feed about 15grams every other day.

I would give between one & two teaspoons daily, put some in a bowl if that’s what your hamster is used to & scatter feed some so she can forage for it.
You can also give fresh food daily & a few extras for variety now & then like flaxseed or other seeds or small pieces of plain unsalted nuts, or a peanut in the shell maybe once a week.
As long as you’re feeding daily you don’t need to keep topping up the bowl if it’s empty.
I think if you’re having to remove her hoard because she’s peed on it she’ll be feeling the need to. keep replacing it so if you do remove it try replacing some with fresh food then she may stop peeing on it which she probably does to protect it!
Russians do tend to hoard quite a lot.

Have you tried scatter feeding? It will encourage her to forage for himself. You could try scattering one spoon a day. 🙂

I have a russian dwarf called Albert and I give him 1 tea spoon of little one dwarf hamster food per day. I also give him sprays, meal worms, fresh veg, seeds and nuts.

I have teaspoons in different sizes, the smallest is 2 grams of food, the larger one 4grams. how much food do you guve in grams?

A teaspoon should be 4g, your smaller spoons might be coffee spoons.

I just use a dessertspoon :) One level dessertspoon. They tend to be about the same size - there may be some variation, but a level dessertspoon would be fine - not too much, not too little. ie the spoons you eat cereal and pudding with, not the larger tablespoons. Spoons do vary in size in different countries too. If you have a set of measuring spoons for baking if tends to say how many mls for a teaspoon. A teaspoon tends to be 5mls and that is equivalent to 5 grammes. A tablespoon is 15ml (Amercian measurements).

I tend to think it's better to give the same amount each day, once a day, but not refill it if it's empty, as Elusive says. They do hoard most of it but then they eat from their hoards. The hoard makes them feel secure, as they are hard wired to think there may be a food shortage.

It may seem a waste of food, but in the run of things, hamster food is not that expensive, and a bag lasts a long time, so if it keeps them happy and feeling secure, it's a small cost perhaps :)

How often do you clean the hamster out? Cleaning them out a lot can make them anxious about their hoards being "stolen" so that can make them start peeing on the hoard to deter thieves! That can be a bit of a vicious circle, as then you have to remove the hoard (or some of it) if it's pee'd on so they pee on it again because it's been "stolen"!

If it is pee'd on then you do need to remove it, but it's best to try and leave some of the old hoard behind, that isn't damp, and also add a dessertspoonful of new food to replace it. To help stop them peeing on it out of habit, you could add the new food slightly to one side of where the hoard is, in a new location. And it should settle down.

If you mainly spot clean, then it won't cause stress from overcleaning. I leave the hoard and nest alone when spot cleaning, but when it's time to do a more major "half clean" I then prune the hoard from underneath, removing the bottom half, which is the older hoard, but leaving some behind.

Some of all this depends on what size cage you have and how much depth of bedding you have - the more bedding there is, the less you need to do a cleanout. I have a robo and I when it's time to do a clean (and I leave it a few months, with spot cleaning in between) I do one half of the cage - eg the left half or right half so the other half is still smelling familiar. Then a couple of weeks later, I'll do the other half of the cage.

What cage do you have? If you want to post a photo of the set up, we might be able to suggest some more tips to get the behaviours back to normal :-)

if it is still clean.
I try to do a full clean as little ass possible, but only as much ass needed. last time i cleaned was about a week ago, i saw the food in her nest and opened it up to see if it was clean, and then i noticed the strong urine smell, so i took it out. i did not change the complete bedding, only the smelly part.

here are some picturs of her, her home and the hoard i found

It would be lovely if you started a diary for your hamster if you wanted to. 🙂

I love your tank amd the clever way you positioned the camera.

I just realised you posted a picture of her. She is adorable! What a lovely neat hoard too.

Aw she is beautiful! And has a lovely home. The hoard looks very neat. Yes if her hoard was pee'd in it would need to be removed and just add a bit of new food back where it was. She might change her hoard location now. Others now more about Russian dwarf habits than me. My robo is incredibly neat! He has a pee spot near his hoard but a bit of distance away and his hoard is always clean and dry. And he only pees in the one place. He's such a neat little boy!

Aw she really is lovely! Her tank does look really nice for her too.
