Egg question

I have heard hamsters should only eat egg white and not yolk. Does anybody know why? I could not find any information about it. Does this mean when I bake Orko a birthday cake I should separate the white from the yolk? I wondered if cooked egg was different.

I don't know anything about that and don't think it's an issue. I've always given both. If you think about it, scrambled egg includes yolk. I've given bits of hard boiled egg with yolk occasionally too - although to be honest with such a small piece the yolk doesn't usually stay attached to the white anyway so it ends up just being the white sometimes. But if scrambled egg is fine for hamsters I don't see that egg yolk is an issue. Probably very nutritious. I make scrambled egg without milk though (works just as well with water) as milk and dairy isn't that digestible for them. Although ours have occasionally had a bit of our leftover scrambled egg made with milk. Infrequently is fine I think. Sometimes I give scrambled egg with a bit of cheese mixed in and that is very popular! Again infrequently.

The only reason people avoid giving egg yolk is because it’s quite high in fat, it’s quite harmless & a small amount is fine once in a while.

Well, eggs are my favourite food and have always given the hamsters some, yolk and all.

Thank you everybody. I read on German hamster forum to only give egg white so I am so pleased to know it is fine to give the yolk too. Orko has only had boiled egg white.

I give either scrambled egg (so the whole egg) or hard-boiled - a bit of both white and yolk.

I think sometimes people take human insecurities (such as fear of fat) and apply them even more strictly to hamsters, but fat is very healthy in moderation. Egg yolk is a good source of vitamin A as well.

Some info here. I remember for a while the media saying limit eggs due to fat - then the story changing to - eat loads of eggs they're fine. This article explains it. Egg yolk doesn't contain the harmful saturated fats that are bad for you.

I’ve found the German forum & other German sites to be a really useful source of info but also notices that they can be a bit OTT over food issues so always a good idea to check it out.

Trust Orko to only like egg white! He totally ignored scrambled egg that my partner made him. It was still untouched this morning.
