Hiii, we have a female Syrian hamster who loves chewing things. We give her wooden toys from the Niteangel brand and try to keep her entertained by letting her out into her playpen and providing her with plenty of foraging opportunities. I’m also planning to buy more items she can chew on safely. The platform she has chewed on is from Getzoo, and it gives me peace of mind because I know it’s safe, just like another one from Niteangel. Should I be worried? I wouldn’t want her to show signs of stress.

I wouldn't worry too much. Even my male syrians used to chew house legs or platform legs (I think they decide they are in the way!). But keep an eye on them in case they show signs of splintering.

Most female syrians seem to love ripping up cardboard egg boxes, so maybe put one of those out regularly! Keeps them busy and it might distract her from chewing the wood legs. Also those Vitastix chews might distract her. They are basically a wood stick with food stuck on and most syrians seem to like those. I get the honey and spelt ones.

I forgot you had a Syrian now :-) So when I answered about playpen time I was thinking you had a dwarf. A female Syrian probably does need out of cage time every day! If she likes coming out. How old is she now?

Yes, we usually give her cardboard things and she loves tearing them up, but it seems she likes wood too, ha ha ha

If we found splinters, should we take the platform away?

He’s five months old, but unlike the dwarf one, who does show more interest in coming out, the Syrian one sometimes seems a bit lazier; to be honest, it really depends on the day. As for coming out, we try to let him out every day, but not for a whole hour – sometimes 20 minutes, 30, 45… He also sometimes shows signs of wanting to go back into his enclosure.

I would just go with what she feels like then :-) Other owners have found they can vary with the heat cycle as well. Being super active at certain times and less interested at others.
