My fiesty little dude was adopted early June 2022 at around 5mo. We'd planned the adoption very carefully to fit around work and I came home from my 12h night shift to make the 1.5hr journey to the rescue to pick him up
he was never a cuddly hamster, he'd previously been housed with another Syrian and had a couple of nasty bite marks bless him so he did not like anyone attempting to pick him up. He did however grow to interact with us on his terms and trust us. The first time he put his paws on my hand I cried I was so happy to have reached that point with him
everything was normal with no signs of illness until getting up for my night shift one day last month and noticing he hadn't eaten the food I'd left out for him so I went searching his burrows and finally found him but with a bulging and dried out eye! Straight to the vets where he was seen and operated on immediately and he became a pirate hamster. They said it looked like there was infection behind the eye which had caused it. First day of recovery went amazingly but second day I was starting to become concerned about the lack of eating and him fighting syringe feeding, plus I was poorly that weekend too so he was hospitalised at my request. He came home that night eating again and exploring his cage
unfortunately he went down very quickly after that. The next morning he was very lethargic and when I first picked him up I honestly thought he'd passed and then he coughed and started moving. I called the out of hours vet hospital and took him straight down. He stopped breathing during examination but they resuscitated him and he stood up. They gave us a 50/50 chance and the choice between hospitalisation with oxygen and fluids or pts. I honestly did not know what to do but given he'd stood up and was still passing poos driving to the vets we chose hospitalisation. Unfortunately a little under an hour later we got the call to say he'd ran across rainbow bridge
it was absolutely heartbreaking and traumatic watching them do resuscitation on his tiny body as they were running him out the room to get to the oxygen when he first stopped breathing. I was so shocked with how quickly things changed
he may have never been a cuddly hamster but that morning he definitely said his goodbyes- he snuggled right into my oldest daughter and when I was carrying him into the vets he lifted his head and kissed me
we miss him so much! We have his ashes with us
