Here is a list of suitable cages available for hamsters in 2024.

Whether you prefer tank style or barred cages, front access or top access, there is, thankfully, plenty of choice in the Uk and Europe. Choice in the US is mainly tanks and tank style or diy. Both tank style and barred cages have their pros and cons. Some people prefer barred cages for the ventilation and closer interaction with the hamster, but they are not so easy to fit deeper bedding in (although you can use bedding panels - eg grass mats, cardboard or perspex). Others prefer tank style enclosures where it's easier to have deep bedding and which can be made in very large sizes if doing a diy cage.

Uk and Europe (US cages further down the page)
NOTE: There are many more cages available in Europe, not listed, that are not available in the Uk

BARRED CAGES 100cm or over

The Savic Plaza 100 £80 100cm x 50cm x 50cm tall - available at Pets at Home and Amazon (cheaper at Pets at home usually). A good cage with plenty of room and suitable for all species of hamster and has a large front opening door which is good for interaction with the hamster and for spot cleaning. Perspex, cardboard or grass mats can be added for deeper bedding. Suitable for Syrians and dwarf hamsters but for dwarf hamsters there should be no more than 25cm drop between the roof and the top of the bedding, for safety. It has 9mm bar spacing officially but it's more like 8.5mm.

The Savic Plaza 120 £100 118cm x 64cm x 52cm tall
This is the much larger version of the Savic Plaza 100. It's probably the largest barred hamster cage with hamster sized bar spacing. It's virtually the same as the Plaza 100, but it has two large doors - one on top and one on the front, so access is very good. It's available from Pets at Home for £100. It has the same 9mm bar spacing (which measures at about 8.5mm) and suitable for Syrians and dwarf hamsters, but for dwarf hamsters there should be no more than 25cm between the roof and top of the bedding to avoid fall risks. Again bedding panels can be used for deeper bedding.

Viking custom perspex panels for deep bedding - for Plaza cages and other barred cages

Savic Aura 120 Plexi - 118cm x 64cm x 62cm - price as yet unknown and not widely available yet but will be available in the Uk
This is similar to the Plaza 120 but the base is extended with 10cm of perspex, allowing for deeper bedding. The cage is also 10cm taller as a result at 62cm tall. It has the same large front and top door but has narrow 6.5mm bar spacing - suitable for mice and dwarf hamsters. The cage will easily hold about 25cm of bedding, but it could be much deeper as bedding doesn't fall out of narrow 6.5mm bar spacing (depending on what bedding you use). This cage will be suitable for all species of hamsters, providing the bedding is deep enough to avoid fall risks from a height. For dwarf hamsters there should be no more than 25cm between the roof and top of the bedding, for safety. This is already released and should be available soon in both the Uk and Europe.

Skyline Barney cage 100cm x 56cm deep x 46cm tall - £74.39 from Zooplus
The Barney cage is now available for shipping to the Uk again, from Zooplus. This is a good sized 100cm cage with narrow 7mm bar spacing, suitable for dwarf hamsters, providing there is no more than 25cm between the roof and the top of the bedding, to avoid fall risks. The narrow bar spacing keeps the substrate in (depending on what substrate you use). It comes with a good house, shelf and ladder. It has a large door on the top and two smaller doors on the front. So access could be limited from the front, but good from above. May also be suitable for Syrian hamsters, but it would be difficult to fit enough bedding with an 11" or 12" wheel.

The Volta cage £75 plus £10 p&p 100cm x 54cm x 40cm tall - Available from eBay and Amazon. This is imported by a Uk pet shop and is very similar to the Ritz cage below, but this one has a good built in house. Pros: - It has very good floor space. Cons - it only has small doors - two on top and one on the front. This is fine for a confident hamster who will happily come out of a small door, but means you'd have to take the bars off for putting larger items in and out or for cleaning probably. The height limits bedding depth, but possible to have a deep bedding area due to the large floor area.

The Little Friends Ritz cage £79.99 100cm x 54 cm x 39cm tall. This is basically the same as the Volta cage (see above), but different coloured bars and comes with a shelf instead of the built in house.

The XL Grosvenor cage £84.99 100cm x 54 cm x 39cm tall. Available from Little Pet Warehouse and Amazon. Top opening only but has a huge top lid. Again this has very good floorspace. It's lower in height than some 100cm cages so limits bedding depth again but the large floor area allows for a deeper bedding area. This could be suitable for dwarf hamsters. NOTE: There are reports that the barred lid could be pushed up at the edges. So it might need a book or similar on the edge

Grosvenor XL.jpg

Ferplast Criceti 100 cage 95cm x 57cm x 50cm tall £133.99 to £165 A very good sized barred cage, at almost 60cm deep and with a large floor area. It has a large top opening lid only. Pros - Size, and has some fairly good shelves with it. Cons - it's expensive and not that easy to find. For dwarf hamsters there should be no more than 25cm between the roof and the top of the substrate to avoid falls risks. NOTE: There are reports that the barred lid is a bit loose at the edge and some hamsters could push it up at the edges and escape. So it might need a book or similar on the edge.

Pets at Home XX Large Cage 95.3cm x 57cm deep x 41cm tall £55
Pets at Home have a new, own brand large cage in 2024 which is reasonably priced, although only has small doors for access, so may not work well for a shy hamster, and the bars would need to be taken off for cleaning. It would be suitable for dwarf hamster, with bedding panels to increase bedding depth, but it's not tall enough for a Syrian Hamster.

TANK STYLE CAGES 100cm approx or over

The Bucatstate 100
This is perspex style tank with a metal frame and a front opening door as well as a lift-off roof. It's 100cm x 50cm. The front opening door is a big bonus. There have been reports that, with very deep bedding, the perspex sides can bow, but it's been found to be fine between 25cm and 30cm deep bedding. It's available from Amazon and costs £179.99.

Jungle pets glass tanks with custom made mesh lids - various sizes - cost varies £120 upwards usually - plus the cost of pallet delivery Junglepets make custom made glass tanks with custom made lids to fit - no diy involved. They are not badly priced for a glass tank but pallet shipping will cost extra.

Tilly's Tanks on ebay 122cm x 50cm x 50cm glass tank that comes with a wood and mesh lid £249.99. The wood on the lid looks a bit splintery so might need sanding.

Custom Aquaria - make custom tanks any size or style you want (even with front opening doors).
The best way to contact them is by phone - and be patient The owner recently said this on their Facebook page. Matthew is a very knowledgeable and helpful person and will design a custom tank for your needs. It may take time though if they are busy. The phone number is on their Facebook page.

The Holzart 100 from Scallywags pet shop - £160. Courier delivery is available
Scallywags pet store sell this wood tank style cage, probably imported from Germany, which has a front drop down door as well as a top opening meshed lid. Scallywags say it can be shipped flatpack by courier, or bought in store (either ready-assembled or flatpack). It measures 100cm x 50cm x 50cm. The shelves can be arranged differently or left out. They are also selling the 115cm version of this cage, but we don't have a price for that. The owner of Scallywags says this is sturdy and good solid wood.

Holzart 100 cage.jpg

Pawhut wood enclosures - various sizes £100 upwards Pawhut make a number of wood and perspex/mesh enclosures. These can provide a lot of space, but they may need checking carefully for rough wood/splinters, or any safety aspects - hinges/ladder suitability - falls from a height. In other words they may need some slight adaptation internally (like leaving the bottom shelf out to allow for bedding height) and some sanding paper handy. Most people also paint them with petsafe waterproofing paint so they don't get smelly and pee soaked. Note: There have been issues with hamsters chewing their way out of these so additional adaptations may be needed. Happy Hamsters suggest reinforcing corners with brackets and tiling the floor.

Rodipet Laola Nagarium painted mdf (wipe clean) and perspex 100cm x 50cm x 50cm £199.82 or 120cm x 50cm x 60cm £234.49 (converted from euros) Certainly not the cheapest option. But the 120cm tank style cage is one of the largest commercial hamster enclosure available and has a good height for plenty of bedding. These fit together in pieces and are perhaps better than a glass tank. It could work out cheaper to make a diy cage though. If you don't want to do diy though - these are an option. Note: Rodipet warn that Female Syrians as they have been known to chew their way out of these.

Laola Nagarium 120cm 500.jpg

Living World Green Eco Habitat Medium 98.5cm x 58.5cm x 61cm high (50cm without the wheels) £235.65 This is made from rubberwood and perspex and another large tank style enclosure (also very expensive). It should really come under diy cages though because the lid needs meshing. The holes in the lid are 2cm - far too large for hamsters, who can escape (and they will find a way to get up there - even using the ventilation holes on the sides and climbing a wheel). Note: Occasionally, some owners have found Hamsters chewing the wood struts and have needed to reinforce these with brackets).

Hamster-Homes Super Large 120cm x 60cmx 42cm tall £239.00 Made in the Uk by a small company. These come in various sizes and also come with a stand/legs as an option. They are very well made, sturdy, tank style cages. The height is approx 38cm internally, which is lower than some, but with the large floor area, it allows for a deep bedding area.

Hamster-Homes Super Large Extra Tall 120cm x 60cm x 52cm tall £279.00

This is a taller version suitable for deep bedding throughout, and for Syrians

Skyline Marrakesh 100 96cm x 47cm deep x 38cm tall - £168.99 from Zooplus
This is a wood and glass tank style cage with a hinged, lift up lid with fine mesh. It's slightly under 100cm x 50 cm but still a fairly good size for a dwarf hamster. Zooplus are listing this as available in the Uk again. It's an expensive option and the Bucatstate 100 is larger. The wood is smooth and thick and there have been no reports of chewing the wood being an issue.

Mewoofun Large 100cm x 50cm x 50cm £130.97 from Amazon
This is a tank style cage, believed to be made from plastic coated fibre board/wood. It's a similar style to the Niteangel cages, needing assembly, but costs quite a lot less. It has some ventilation slots on top and ventilation holes in the side perspex. There is a version with a front opening door (similar to the Bucatstate front door) but this doesn't seem to be available in the Uk and only in the US.

Ferplast Maxi Duna Multy 99cm x 51.5cm x 36cm tall - £109.99 from Porton Aquapet but price varies. Also from Amazon where the price fluctuates wildly and can go over £200. Ordering direct from Ferplast it's a fixed price of £161.20. A perspex tank style cage which could be a good cage for a dwarf hamster, but something taller would be better, for more bedding. It's limited in height but the size allows for a deep bedding area. It really needs a platform adding in it as well for adequate enrichment. Spare parts are available for this cage in case of breakages - direct from Ferplast or Porton Aquapet. It has a very large top opening door for access with narrow bar spacing.

DIY CAGES AND BIN CAGES

A bin cage is probably the cheapest diy cage. However, there aren't really any plastic storage bins that are a suitable size in the Uk. However, you could cut the ends off two bins and hot glue them together to make a bigger one. There are quite a few options for large bins in the US though. Bin cages need adequate ventilation and the roof fully meshing.

Ikea Detolf Hack cage 163cm x 43cm x 37cm tall - second hand price, plus cost of materials to make wood and mesh lids This is basically an Ikea Detolf glass cabinet, tipped on its back and the doors left off so it's open on top. A fairly easy diy project as you only need to make two lids (easier to lift off two smaller ones than one large one) out of strips of wood with mesh attached. It makes a large cage. It's not that deep (wide) at 43cm, but gives a large floor area. It is also not that tall and an 11" wheel will fit in but not a 12" wheel. They really need to stand on something for support underneath for most of the full length. Note: This does have wood ends and some hamsters have been known to chew these but they can be reinforced. The detolf is not available new any more, only second hand.

Ikea Linmon cage Hack 100cm x 56.6cm x 46.6cm tall Cost: Could be over £100 with all materials. There are plenty of tutorials online and on youtube for making the Linmon cage from Ikea parts (fibreboard and glass). You need tools. Some people put them on wheels as well. Note: The fibre board is less likely to be chewed than a wood cage, but hamsters have still been known to chew away in the corners - so the corners may need reinforcing.

Also various other Ikea hack cages on this thread here

DIY is not always the cheapest option. But it can make a larger cage. The cheapest option is probably a second hand barred cage, second hand fish tank or second hand detolf.

Zoozone Large 100cm x 51cm x 37cm £79.99 This is under diy cages because the top bars need meshing for it to be suitable for a hamster. This is very similar to the Maxi Duna Multy. The bar spacing is huge and very easy for a hamster to escape so the lid does need meshing. Cons: Some people find the lid on this fiddly to open and close at first, but apparently you can get used to it/develop a knack. The Maxi duna has narrower bars on top though so doesn't need meshing. This would be suitable for a dwarf hamster with a deep bedding area, but something taller would be better, to fit more bedding. Note: This doesn't seem to be easily available any more but may be available second hand.

SECOND HAND CAGES AVAILABLE

This is usually the cheapest option of all and there are some excellent used cages on ebay and other sites. Some cages are no longer available new in the Uk, which includes the Alexander cage (100cm x 50cm x 50cm approx). A used four foot fish tank can be used (needs a lid making). Also used Savic Plaza cages are available fairly regularly and sometimes used Barney cages can be found.

US AND CANADA

For our US members and Canadian members. There are very few commercial cages big enough for hamsters and less barred cages available. Many owners use diy cages, 75 gallon glass tanks, or bin cages or detolfs. Glass tanks tend to be cheaper in the US. Some barred cages and larger commercial cages are available though. There is the Prevue cage - if available. Exotic Nutrition sell a cage that looks identical to the Preview called the Zanzibar. It's not a 100cm cage, but may be acceptable within US guidelines. We believe 100cm or larger enclosures are more suitable however. Niteangel also sell tank style cages that look very similar to the Rodipet LaOla cage above. And there is a new Exotic Nutrition tank style cage.

Prevue/Zanzibar cage- approx 82cm x 48cm (617 sq inches)

The Bucatstate 100 listed above is also available in the US.

Niteangel Vista 40.7" x 22.7" x 22.9" (approx 100cm x 57cm) $259.99

Mewoofun Large with either solid front or front opening door from Amazon $114 to $149 The Mewoofun large, mentioned above, is available in the US either with a solid front or a front opening door.

Exotic Nutrition Sahara 40" x 20" x 21" tall (approx 100cm x 50cm) - approx $183

This is the largest size of this cage/enclosure. We haven't reviewed this or had any feedback so are unsure of how good ventilation is.

Just adding this video of my personal choice of commercial cages 100cm or over :) . With reasons. Based on cost, ease of use and accessibility mainly.
