I caught Bernard biting at the acrylic on his Bucatstate this morning😕 He only did it for a minute and it doesn’t look like there’s a ton of teeth marks but now I’m worried and stressed. It seems like he went right back to sleep but I have to go to work so I can’t keep an eye on him but I did set up one of our mini Blink cams pointing where he was chewing to try and see if he keeps doing it. I put a few more chews (Whimzee, balsa wood, etc) in his cage to see if that would help. I’ve never seen him do this before. Help? I hope it’s not easy for his teeth to break through😭

The sound of his teeth scraping is quite audible 🙁 I think it would take him a while to get through to the acrylic. You should be able to buy spare panels, but even so they could be expensive and it might not be doing his teeth much good. I wonder if putting some cardboard, for instance, from a cereal box, there would help.

It seems to be in the corner where he can brace himself to apply enough pressure to the flat surface to get a grip on it. It makes sense as hamsters in the wild dig tunnels that are much deeper than hamster cages. It might be a bit of surplus Spring time energy. Does he get out of cage time? I think giving him extra chews is good too.

Is he biting or scratching at the floor? It could be just a normal hamster reaction to digging down and hitting an obstacle :-) Hamsters do things like that inside wood houses as well at first. Lots of banging and scratching - maybe just a nesting instinct? Even so, keep an eye on it in case he keeps doing it.

Would I just cut up a cereal box and put against that panel? Do I need to do anything to clean it before putting it in his cage? He has not had out of cage time since I got him 2 months ago, other than a short vet visit. I’ve been meaning to clean our bathtub so I can try that as a playpen.

I’ve only seen it once and that was this morning, and it seemed like it was just the wall, not the floor. And now it looks like he’s covered up that section with bedding but who knows if he’ll do it again. I have a camera on that spot but it’s not picking up much motion so it needs to be adjusted but no one is home to do that right now lol. He’s normally so quiet and peaceful so it definitely freaked me out

Surprising how much noise they can make! I'd just keep an eye on it. He was probably just settling down to sleep for the day and fussing around :-)

Yes, my rainbow hammy Socks liked Quaker Oats boxes. I just gave them to him. Out of cage time might help to work off some energy ❤️

@Maz @Socks' Mum

Thank you guys!!! I’ll keep an eye on it and give him even more enrichment (he already has so much lol) and get our bathtub cleaned so he can try some playpen time. Hopefully it’s just a one-time thing, or at the very least not common. I’ll follow-up🤗
