I had to zoom in to see tiny little Bernard. He seems confident for a robo.

He still hasn't grown!
I thought he had a peculiar way of running at first, with his backlegs very far apart but he can run very fast.
I know Robos are built for speed, body low to the ground with backlegs far apart for stability but Bernard looks a little odd, cartoonish almost.

I don't get on with the top opening glass tank at all so am trying to source a low, barred cage with a large front opening door like a Hamster Heaven.

I'm planning to attach removable acrylic panels from the outside to keep winter drafts out and then set it up like the tank.

I need to do the cutting outdoors so need to wait for reasonable weather.
Should be easy enough to find a second hand HH as there are lots available.

I think Orko looks funny when he runs too. His little legs look far apart.

It's the Mickey 2XL in need to look for. It has smaller bar spacing than the HH.

They are so hard to find second hand - fingers crossed. The other cages that have the narrow bar spacing are the Marchioro Kevin (rarely available) and the Barney and Alexander cages (but they are both 100cm cages). However the old style Barney was about the size of the hamster heaven so that’s one worth looking out for too - it has the narrow bar spacing but it’s a bit taller and only has front opening doors. I had to choose between that and the Mickey 2XL when I first bought a cage - I chose the Mickey 2XL because it was sturdier and had the front opening door but it was a close thing. The old style Barney was slightly bigger (and a bit taller). So good for a Syrian but not so much for a dwarf.

I've never heard of the Marchioro Kevin and must look it up.
I have seen Barneys but don't like them because of the small front doors and same with the Alexander.
Bernard's happy in the tank so there's no rush but i struggle with a top opening.
The Kerry was bought as a foster tank and would be fine for that but we are keeping Bernard.

I think Elusive has a Kevin :-). They don’t come up very often though. Also has a big front door and narrow bar spacing.

The Mickey 2XL used to be popular on mouse forums! Maybe check their ads?

It’s hard to find cages with the narrow bar spacing which is why people sometimes end up using tanks for very small robos - but the idea of Perspex round a hamster heaven sounds good. You always have good creative solutions so I’m sure you’ll find/sort something!

The one thing that’s always bugged me is the Skyline Leon cage - it has 6mm bar spacing and solid levels and woukd be great for robos - if only the floor was bigger! It’s only about 65 x 35.

Thanks Maz, i'll check out the mouse forums too. I'd consider a top opening barred cage and then add a front opening door myself. Same idea as the Plaza with the added top door.

Aww bless, must have seemed like a big adventure for little Bernard!
I think Elusive has a Kevin :). They don’t come up very often though. Also has a big front door and narrow bar spacing.
My all time favourite 80x50 cage, they’re not generally available now but if you ever see onr go for it!

I think the biggest problem with Bernard's tank is the noisy wire top. The sound of metal on glass.
I'll tape a strip of velcro around the glass edge to see if that cushions it enough to stop the cluttering noise.
The door itself is a problem as well because it's noisy.
To replace the wire top with a meshed wooden lid would be an option or replace the door with a quiet one like the top door of Clive's Plaza.

I think the Mickey 2XL is the only suitable barred cage for a tiny Robo like Bernard or the Kevin elusive has. I'm not so sure about the Hamster Heaven now.

Bernard is fine in the tank and i can easily get him out if he wants to come out but i'd like something a bit bigger and more practical.

Bernard is in the playground again and running on the flying saucer.20221219_221734.jpg

Having a quick rest. He even manages the big saucer if i give it a little push first to get him started.

Wow! Mini robo on giant saucer and his legs captured in motion! Great photo. Lucky Bernard - he must think he's gone to heaven. Pip hasn't worked out what a flying saucer is yet - sniffs it - looking forward to him discovering it moves.

Aww, cute little Bernard. Is it my imagination or has he grown a little bit?
